Removing rust stains from white interior of vintage Ludwig

Loading...

Hi all

I'm in the process of cleaning up a 1968 Ludwig kit that I have recently purchased and inside of the kick drum shell there are a number of small stains on its white painted interior where some of the bolts for the lugs have rusted slightly. What would be the best way to remove these rust stains without causing any damage to the original white painted interior?

I would try a damp cloth with some dishwashing detergent like Dawn, lightly scrubb. Don't soak it and get water in the holes .

Thank you!

I don't think he can,.... rust burro's. Maybe fade it, but if they rusted from under to top, he wont.

So little hope for removing these rust stains?

I'd try a cloth dabbed with some vinegar or with CLR if that didn't work. Something acidic should work.

I'd test an area that was hidden to make sure that paint wouldn't be removed.

I would just lightly clean those spots and then just leave them as is. Personally, I would just get new, slightly larger washers to cover up the rust spots.

I know you may be trying to keep everything original, but has anyone ever walked away from a sale because a few rusty washers were replaced with new on the inside of the bass drum?

Have you tried any of these ideas?

I tried cleaning the rust stains on the onside of the shell earlier today with a rag and vinegar and it certainly has taken the worst of it off but not completely, and it did take a long while with repeated working on the areas. Haven't tried the suggested CLR or equivalent product yet but may give that a go.

I also tried soaking the the tension rods and rusty screws etc in vinegar over night and found this to be really effective, quite surprising how much rust it was able to remove.

Car wax those bolts and screws so they don't start rusting again.
