Leg Cramps After Drumming

From DrumBob

I know, you're right. Last year, I couldn't even get a beer at the bar. There was no way to get close enough to order one, so I'll bring my own drinks. Actually, it's a fun gig; a room full of drunk college kids. The girls like the band (a plus, as we are all in our 50's and 60's) and the guys go where the girls are.

Now you're talkin', DrumBob! If you can bring your own drinks and play for college girls who like the band, you'll be in rock'n'roll heaven! Have a ball!

Just for the record, I had a very strenuous gig last night and no problems after going to bed. I ate a banana right before starting, and drank water all night. I bought a bottle of tonic water and didn't realize it was going to be sweet, as I've never had the stuff before. I drank two sips and tossed it out. I can't deal with sweet drinks anymore. Maybe I will try the pickle juice!

The gig itself was a total zoo of college kids getting drunk, and of course, there was a scuffle between a couple of rowdies. Security threw the culprit out and he stood on the porch for at least two hours, wouldn't leave and kept on mouthing off to the bouncer and owner every time someone opened the door. Finally, the cops came and took the kid home, I'm sure.

I'm getting to the point where I don't know if I want to do gigs like this anymore. It was just bedlam. The noise level in this place was deafening, there were too many bodies crammed in, and our followers-all older people-were eventually scared away by all the kids going crazy. We all went to a diner to eat afterwards and agreed that the night had been out of control. Someone flung beer at one point that hit me and our bass player, and we were playing at high volume all night with no dynamics.

Really, the only redeeming factor were the college girls, some of whom were gorgeous. I saw one who was super model stunning looking. Of course, we're under no illusions that any of these kids were interested in any of us senior citizens, but at least it made the night somewhat enjoyable.

Hey, DrumBob!

Glad to hear that you felt good physically after the gig! Maybe you've come across some help for the cramps! We've all had gigs like that. I played in a country band several years ago over the winter. I'm not a huge fan of country but, the money was good and rehearsing was minimal. Every night, there was a drunken brawl! Often women were involved! It got to the point where I'd pray the power went out! It was a horrible winter. Luckily, the good jobs outnumber the bad. If not, I'd have taken up stamp collecting years ago. Hang in, amigo! Great gigs are just around the corner!

It might be time to find a nice quiet jazz gig in a suburban hotel lounge Bob!:p

I didn't want to burst anyone's bubble concerning tonic water, but I guess I can say it now that you didn't like it, there is no scientific evidence that tonic water does anything for cramps. And tonic water is very diluted , so even if it helped, you would have to drink way to much for it to make a difference.

Pickle juice baby! Pickle juice...Cool1

Yes, they are. I'd say that 95% of the gigs I play are just fine overall, but we all get weird ones now and then.

LOL Yeah I don't like the taste o tonic water, either....and I read the same scientific material that says it doesn't work...but at least two other people and myself have gotten relief from it, so maybe the cramps are in my head? LOL For sure that's true! ;)
