You did a great job of bringing your CB700 kit back to life! Of course, I'm partial to Purple Sparkle! I've got a 1971 Slingerland kit in original "Sparkling Purple Pearl"!

I really like the "wristwach" lugs, too! I had a CB700 "Parallel Lay" snare drum, that had one of the best extended-style strainer systems. I traded it to a good friend for his early 60's COB Powertone with clock-face strainer. It deserved to go to him, as he also has a CB kit with the same style lugs!

Thanks, I'm really happy with how it turned out! Sounds great too :) You have a very cool Slingerland kit and that snare looks nice (probably not too easy to find these days). Regarding the wrap...I used vinyl fabric. Cost of material is under $50 for two yards :)

Thanks for the compliment on my Slingerland kit and for letting me know what you used to wrap your drums. And, yes, the CB700 snare drum is a tough one to find! The snare mechanism is actually engineered better than the Tama and Ludwig versions!

A couple questions for you about the vinyl fabric:

1) Is it as durable as normal wrap? Is it thicker/thinner etc?

2) Do you have a problem with heads fitting over the fabric (assuming you wrap all the way to the bearing edge)?

3) What do you use for adhesion? Double sided tape or glue? Is the fabric any harder/easier to work with than normal wrap?

4) Where did you get the vinyl fabric material? Hobby Lobby? Michael's?

Fantastic job! I'm very intrigued about this vinyl fabric. It looks outstanding in the pictures, and I imagine it looks even better in person. Regular drum wrap is so expensive. This is is certainly a cost effective alternative.

Thanks! Here are the answers to your questions....

I have had no issues with durability (although, there is no clear coating on outside...you can "feel" the texture of material/glitter). You can buy some vinyl fabric that does have a coating like normal drum wraps but the sparkle/glitter is much smaller and not as impressive.

2) Do you have a problem with heads fitting over the fabric (assuming you wrap all the way to the bearing edge)?

No problems with heads fitting unless the material goes to far up close to the bearing edge (just like other wraps). I usually give it about a 1/8" to 1/4" space. The original wrap does need to be removed or it will be too thick and heads won't seat correctly.

3) What do you use for adhesion? Double sided tape or glue? Is the fabric any harder/easier to work with than normal wrap?

I use double sided carpet tape. Robert's brand carpet tape seems to work the best. I think this material is super easy to wrap drums with and easy to cut.

I get my wrap from Fabric Empire. www.fabricempire.com They have a store and also sell on ebay. If you order from them...tell them AR Drummer sent you :)

Your wristwatch kit looks fantastic

I was wondering did you cut the fabric so that it just meets the collar of the head ?

or does the head ride over the edge of the fabric?

As for durability I expect the vinyl fabric would be very durable and more resistant to lite scratches than conventional drum wrap since they use the same stuff to upholster things like bar stools and restaurant booths.

I rescued these C.B. 700 drums from the curbside trash the original electric blue wraps were scratched to death and filthy with mildew between the wrap and the outer ply.

The chrome bass drum hoops were both beyond help

as was the original bass drum receiver for the missing swiv-o-matic cloned tom arms.

I stripped the wraps (what a filthy mess) including a very stubborn glue strip for the old wrap from each drum, and drilled the shells for 7/8" hardware like yours and then I just put them back together with no treatment to the bare shells so I have a blank canvass of sorts myself here and I really love how your drums turned out GREAT JOB!!

I cut it the same as if it was a regular drum wrap. The head does go over the material slightly.

How about a nice stain over those shells? The wood seems to have a nice grain to it.
