Here's the ice drumset from Sweden. They don't sound half bad either.

While I do agree that most drummers are traditionalists when it comes to the mechanical workings of a drum, I do admire many of the "crazy" designers who were trying to look for ways to make drums evolve in much the same way that car designers of the same era, were trying to push the boundaries of automobile design.....bubble hoods, rocket-like fins and taillights, etc. Some of these "crazy" drum designs are the same thing. I guess it was a matter of trying something and seeing "What would happen if...."
Of course, we can clearly see that some of these drum sets were designed for a one-time (or limited) performance...The ice drums and the cheese drums.... Okay, I get it. But, the more recent "crazy" drums from Peavey and Arbiter were actually forward-thinking designs that worked beautifully whether most drummers liked the look or not. Yes, there were problems with those ideas, too. The Peaveys got bumped and scratched easily. The Arbiters only accepted drumheads with flesh hoops similar in size to Remo and were EXTREMELY heavy and thick shells (12-ply rock maple).
There are a few other newer designs that are of interest to me, too. Matt Gaither designed some drums with a "spoke" inside the shell that took the tension away from the shell, itself...I can't find much information on them, but the idea seems intriguing.
Molecules made some acrylic bubble shaped drums....very weird, but visually stunning...but I've heard they can't be made to sound good no matter what you do with them!
