1971 Ludwig... opinions?

Warrenwood, you're going to like the sound of those incoming Ludwigs. Like you, I have a 1960's Slingerland, which I love. Great mahogany sound. But I also like the sound of my 1970 Ludwigs with the maple interior. I can really tell the difference. The maple gives them a nice punch, and more volume. Best-of-both-worlds kind of thing. Congratulations on your purchase. I was rooting for you.

I also want to give a special "thank you" to Grantro from this forum. He has previously made some deals with the seller, and he "introduced" the seller to me. Grantro told the seller that I was not a flake, and helped us to negotiate a good deal, one that was good for both the seller and me. Thank you!!!

No problem!! I enjoyed helping out!! Please post more pics when you get them...

Cheers

Hollywood hardware would be relatively easy to find although 1400 cymbal stands can get pretty pricey (Ringo). If you want to go the Big Beat route then the Atlas cymbal stands from that era can be a bit harder to find and equally expensive (Bonham).

Searching the site, it looks like the hardware was the only difference between Big Beat and Hollywood. Since this set doesn't have any hardware, and given my old set had Atlas stands, I think Big Beat is the direction I'll go.

Current sets
2018 Precision Drum (natural maple, 10/12/13/16/20)
Gretsch USA: 1958 3-ply (white pearl, 12/16/20), 1976 6-ply (12/13/16/22), 1998 6-ply (walnut, 8/10/12/14/16/20)
Slingerland: 1963 (BDP, 13/16/22), 1966 (Sparkle red, 13/16/20)

Thank you everybody for your kind thoughts and support! The seller actually had a couple of other Ludwig items from the same period (Atlas stand and a Speed King pedal.) We put together a deal that was fair to both of us, so I bought all three and they shipped out today!I also want to give a special "thank you" to Grantro from this forum. He has previously made some deals with the seller, and he "introduced" the seller to me. Grantro told the seller that I was not a flake, and helped us to negotiate a good deal, one that was good for both the seller and me. Thank you!!!I'll post photos when the set arrives. One big question for me: should I try to exclusively buy additional Ludwig hardware from the same period? It would take time, but would make it more collectible. On the other hand, I want to play it not just stare at its beauty! My Slingerland set is a "players grade" kit, and I use DW hardware and Gauger RIMS mounts on it. My Precision Drum set also uses DW hardware. I guess to play it I can temporarily swap around stands and stuff :) .

That's great news, so glad to hear it worked out for you. As for the hardware, seeing as you need to purchase anyway, why not take your time and purchase Ludwig stands as they turn up? Trust me, once you've completed your collection you will not regret having everything by the correct manufacturer. Myself, I would go after Big Beat, Atlas, or Hercules.

Any of which would compliment you kit nicely. Can't wait to see pics.

Seacliffe, that's my plan. I used Atlas stands in high school/college, so I'll take my time and pick up Atlas pieces. The set has the original heads, so of course I'll change them out and save the originals. I have a fondness for Evans G1 coated/clear combos on the Slingerland set, I'll try them on the Ludwig and see how it sounds.

One sad thing: I just missed buying a B&O badge Acrolite from my local Facebook Marketplace. Snare, case, stand, practice pad, etc., $100. Dangit!

In the meantime, I'll "borrow" the DW snare and hardware from one of my other sets so I can play! :)

Ouch, that's depressing, quite a steal. It's good that you're checking FB Marketplace, it's amazing what will turn up on that site. I'm sure you're aware of Craigslist.

Not that long ago I updated some of my stands from a local guy that was thinning out his inventory. I picked up (3) late 70's Hercules stands (2-boom, 1-straight) that were absolutely mint for close to half of what they regularly sell for on eBay. Best of luck.
