Ludwig questions! Oyster finish, bowling ball, lugs, HH stand and more...

Hi all,

New to the forum so please forgive any repetition... I've been reading for an hour and have learnt a lot but also have some questions that are surely only from the expert eye!

This is my 1964 Ludwig 4-piece with an extra 1968 12-inch tom tom.

I would like to know...

1) I have been calling these Blue Oyster Pearl - am I right?

2) The previous owner said they were 'Super Classics' - do we concur?

3) I understand they are mahogany-poplar-mahogany, any disagreement on that?

3) The extra (12") tom-tom - is that the slightly different 'bowling ball' finish I've been reading about?

4) Given that the BD has been modified to take a twin tom holder, would you suggest selling it with the extra tom, or as a 4-piece? (I still have the Consolette mount too)

5) I've read about an 'Atlas' hi hat stand - is that it? Or do I have something different? What about the snare stand?

Any comments welcome.

Welcome to our little world on the wierd web...wait, I mean...oh, never mind. Welcome, and very nice kit! Sky Blue Pearl, and the "orphan" is not the bowling ball, just a different slice from a different year. Those are excellent and are you really selling them?

sadly yes! It's for something almost as precious though, an engagement ring... Glad you like the kit and thanks for the comment on the finish

Wow...too bad there is no other way, but at least post them in our for sale section before throwing them on ebay. At least someone who can truly appreciate them would get a shot at them first.

Aren't most folks on here in USA?... just that I'm in England and I doubt I could ship it safely and economically... I know what you mean about appreciators though; I wouldn't want it to go to a careless owner...

(I still have the Consolette mount too)You can't really go back and un-change that double tom mount hole. I'd probably sell it as a 4-piece -with full disclosure about the modifications, of course.5) I've read about an 'Atlas' hi hat stand - is that it? Or do I have something different? What about the snare stand?No. That's a flat base Spur-Lok stand. It's interesting to note the inclusion of LARGE Classic lugs on that 12" tom. Usually, they are small Classics on the 12" toms.

Those are actually Oyster Blue Pearl -- slightly different from Sky Blue Pearl. The SBP had more of a monochromatic 3D look, and lacked the characteristic oyster pattern seen on Ringo's Oyster Black drums.

Here's an example of SBP for comparison:
