Suddenly Inherited Rogers Kit From Brother - Restoration!

Loading...

The last big issue with the Big R kit were the bass drum hoops. You may have seen an earlier post, showing the smashed section of the batter hoop, which has been repaired. The front hoop suffered from quite a bit of the outer ply de-laminating, probably from the time spent in the shed. To make a long story short, the easiest way to repair this, was to remove the length of ply in question, and cut it into lengths that allowed for gluing and clamping using my custom brackets shown in an earlier post. This repair worked very well and, after using my paint pen, is not very noticeable.

Concerning the batter hoop, I used "Plastic Wood" to fill in the missing ply section. Worked really well. I took the advice of some members and decided not to use this section for the bass drum pedal. You'll see this repair in pictures to be posted very soon, showing the entire kit!

Here is the complete 1976 Rogers Big R kit, with a 1976 Ludwig 411 Super Sensitive snare drum, Pearl hi hat and snare drum stands, PDP straight cymbal stand, no-name Pearl-style boom cymbal stand, Tama Iron Cobra Jr. double pedal, 20" Zildjian A Medium-heavy ride, 18" Sabian AAX light crash and Zildjian 16" hi hat cymbals. (yes, 16"! I'll mention about this in another post)

I set the kit up today, as I thought that Catherine's brother might have.

This has been a long restoration, about 1 month. Much of the hardware that I thought would be better off for "metal recycling" actually cleaned up well! There were two identical Pearl hi hat stands and I still need to clean the second stand. I'll get to it...eventually!

I hope you all enjoy seeing the kit complete. Many thanks to all of the VDF members for their support and good wishes with this project!

Three more pictures showing the bass drum batter hoop, with repaired section. As you can see, I only needed to move the repaired section one panel to the left. This also aligned the inlay strip seams with those on the bass drum. I'm kind of anal about that! You can also see the Pearl HPP2 "hoop protector", which will keep the pedal clamp from smashing the thin Rogers hoop.

And, finally, some info on the 16" hi hat cymbals!

When I picked up everything, there appeared to be no hi hat cymbals. In addition to the 20" Zildjian A and 18" Sabian AAX, there was one 16" Zildjian, weighing in at only 998 grams...and it had a split almost half way around. It all of a sudden just occurred to me that this was probably the top hat cymbal and all that constant bashing must have broken it. For the pictures, I took my 16" Zildjian A and used it for the bottom. You should be able to easily see the damage to the upper cymbal.

Well, that's pretty much it. The kit, and all hardware and cymbals, will be up for sale in the very near future!

Hi Doug!

Greatly appreciate the compliments and that you enjoyed the thread. It's been a wild ride. I've had lots of kits over the decades, but none have taken this amount of time. Then, again, I was younger and I could work endlessly with restoration. Now, I have to take repeated bladder breaks...and naps!! LoLoLoLo

Very cool, John! The bass drum serial number is D21685. Your Dyna would have been an ideal match for Catherine's Big R kit!
