My SONOR BD's are wrapped the same way. Two seams near the spurs. One BD is 1977 the other is 80.

That's some mighty pretty "transition" Oyster Black.

There's always 2 seams on any drum bigger than 16" that's wrapped in standard drum wrap. Generally they tried to locate those seams near the bottom on a bass drum but if someone drilled the tom holder base plate, or spur brackets, or vent hole on the wrong panel chances are they proceeded from there to finish off the drum regardless of where the seams fell (at least if they weren't at the top of the drum....probably). It would be fairly easy for an inattentive or tired worker to put one of those holes on the wrong panel (in relation to the seams) and then have to finish putting everything else on relative to that. Whether the driller or anyone further down the production line noticed (or cared) about that is another matter.

That’s pretty much what I was thinking. Nothing else looks suspect (glue, grommet, extra holes). Maybe a Friday afternoon drum.

So there is such a thing as a “transition “ OBP? Mark F said something about that, too. So far, it’s lookin’ good!

Yes, very frustrating when only half the drums show up! What did arrive sure looks great! Talk about shiny wrap! K.O., and others, are aware of the "transition" oyster wrap. I like it so much better than the "bowling ball" wrap, which can be a love/hate thing!

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the set. No pressure at all with the SS snare drum. Just let me know!

It is indeed shiny, which is one of the reasons I bought this particular set. But it’s got lots of tiny, light scratches on it. I couldn’t resist trying out a little Novus 2 on the top. It is apparent a previous owner liked to leave a pair of sticks resting on the top of the bass drum, leaning against the top lugs on both side of the center stalk. Using Novus 2 with a fair amount of pressure took most of the scratches off, but the grit in the Novus itself left smaller, lighter marks, especially on the black sections. I found another application or two with very light pressure virtually eliminated these light scratches. I’ve never heard anyone talking about this happening. If someone has or knows of a compound finer than Novus 2, I’d like to know what that is!

I haven’t played them yet. They showed up this afternoon and I haven’t had the chance yet.

There are typically two seams on the bass drum, at least in vintage ones. They are usually at approximately the 5 and 7 o’clock position where they can’t be seen when the drums are set up. This drum has one seam at a very visible 9 o’clock position. It’s okay. It adds character.
