Ludwig Red Sparkle - Shell Drilling

Loading...

Hello! I'm not sure if you are all checking out the videos I have been putting together. There are about 10 different sections of the Ludwig Factory from 1964.

Here is the newest addition

1. Drilling a Shell

2. Drilling a Snare Shell

3. Drilling for Hardware

4. Installing a Ludwig Grommet!

Enjoy and click to Youtube to see the rest of the videos...

Hey that black oyster shell toward the end COULD have been one of Ringo's actual drums being made for his super-classic set.....how cool would that be? Cool Dude

Yep! and the fact he does not even measure for the badge! Just put that hole about here.....

Answers the question about badge placement. This is proof there was no system!

Cool! Thanks for the cool vids!

I'm still waiting for the video about them actually making the shell and putting on the re-rings...

Gotta love how the bass drum is being drilled basically by hand. They do use a jig, but no drill press. This might explain the slight mis-alignment of the lugs I've seen on the 3-ply drums over the years....

Just added a short clip of the machine they used to clean up the bearing edges. Not sure if I mentioned this, but the video was taken by William F Ludwig II. It looks as thought the factory was closed in most of the film and certain employees were there to demonstrate the machines and processes.

Can someone confirm what he is doing in the second video. It looks to me like he is possibly trueing the edge?

From Webmaster

Can someone confirm what he is doing in the second video. It looks to me like he is possibly trueing the edge? David

I think he's cutting snare beds on marching drums by the looks of it to me......

I thought so originally, but it looks like a stationary router bit and he is running the shell straight along the edge. Unless the bit is traveling up and we do not see that on the movie.

Also, when he holds up the shell can anyone see the snare bed?

Thanks

David
