Ludwig P-88 Throw Off

Hey, guys,

Sorry, I think I asked this question before but, I can't find any responses. This is probably due to my lack of computer skills! What do you guys think of this strainer? Actually, as long as I'm inquiring, what do you think is the best strainer for a Ludwig late 70's Supra? Thanks.

Brian!

I know you're going to get lots of opinions on what's "best" for a 70's Supra...or any Supra for that matter. I'll go first!

Some will say the P85, while others really like the P86. Myself, I really LOVE the new P88 throw off! It comes packaged in a fancy box with the P35 butt. Here are both on my custom-built NOB (Nickle On Brass) shell, using parts from an Acrolite.

You're welcome!

Just remember that the P35 butt won't fit the holes for the P32 unless you tap the matching blank holes for 8-32. There's been quite a bit of controversy about this, but the majority seem to think it's because the hole spacing for the P32 can vary. However, the P88 itself is really nice!

Hey, Mark!

As usual, I am indebted to you for your vast expertise! I certainly appreciate your fast response, my friend! I may just give this strainer a try! Thanks very much, Mark!

Hi Brian,

As always, you're very welcome! Many people also really like the INde strainer, which is also excellent. Since the mounting feet are designed for multiple spacing, why not just use a Ludwig strainer on a Ludwig snare drum, that is already designed for a 2.5" spacing.

The venerable P-85 has always worked well for me, but the new P88 is built to a higher standard, works AND looks great!

You're so right, Mark! I have a beautiful vintage P-85 and an excellent P-83 which I switch around occasionally on my late 70's Supra. I guess I'm happiest, when not playing, just tinkering around with my old drums. I've just finished installing some DF tube lugs just for a change. I'll probably put the P-83 on before assembling everything as well. Oh well, keeps me off the streets! Take care, amigo!

I, too, love to "tinker" with my drums. Sometimes I'll just sit in my recliner and gaze at all my snare drums and kits! It's an expensive hobby, but probably less than wine, women and therapy!! LoLoLoLo

I also have some snare drums with both P83 and P85 strainers that only accept string. I prefer strainers that can accept tape strips, which, for myself, is so much easier than futzing with string!
