Sling set 70s ID potential buy for Dean

Loading...

Through a friend, I was put on to a nice guy who wants to sell this set. I'd like to give him as much info as possible and wouldn't mind what you guys thought of this yourselves.

Sorry for the old school pics, but 4th pic has serials. I have not seen the drums in person yet. Not in the pics, the set has cases, more Zildjian cymbals, original Sling bass drum pedal and more extras.

Your thoughts greatly appreciated and there's no amount of info I'd feel is too much. Thanks. Dean

Are you looking to buy them or just helping him sell them?

Looks to be a classic set of Slingerland 3 ply drums. Brass sound King snare. Hard to go wrong if the price is right. Slingerlands tend to be lower priced than Ludwigs, Rogers. or Gretsch from the same era. which makes them a potential bargain if you want to buy some classic vintage drums...and is a bit a of a drag if you want to sell classic vintage drums.

If you're buying...get a single tom holder arm, closet or sell the 14, find another 16" and you almost have a Buddy Rich set. If you're selling make that suggestion to potential buyers.

Re reading your title I guess you're buying, If they were near me I'd definitely be tempted, primarily due to the possible Buddy set, but it all comes down to price.

+1 with K.O. Mid 70's for main kit (255xxx is 76ish). Snare is a couple years newer (328xxx is 78ish). No glaring inconsistencies apparent in the very limited photos. As an esteemed member here likes to say "condition is everything". Worth an in person look.

You friends Tom measurements are a bit out I think..

could be 12x8 & 13x9... or 13x9 & 14x10..

Either way it would have been a special ordered kit, or put together kit (being with a 24" BD & the 16" FT combo)...

Cheers

John

Larger Tom appears to be 10x14...8 lugs, 13 has 6. I don't remember if there was a cataloged kit in those sizes not that it matters in any way. Ludwig Pro Beat was those sizes with an 18" floor tom added on (13/14/16/18/24).

Again, I started with a guess and a bunch of questions and you guys got me all the facts I need to pursue this set. Thank you very much guys for taking the time to reply. I am never let down with the help and advice I get here.

As far as a price, I now have to come up a fair offer, low enough to give me a profit margin and yet not too low as to offend the owner.

I did some research on the bay, reverb and a few other sources and seem to think the set in total is hovering around the $1500 top price range? I can't afford the set on my own resources, so I'd take the set, flip it and take my cut. If I flip the set after some VDF TLC and want to make, say, $200 commission, maybe I'd make an initial offer of $900.

Am I off my rocker? How you guys formulate your deals?

As usual, I won't want to sell it. Happens with every nice set I get.....Sigh. d.

Personally, I think your valuation is a bit high. As much as we'd like to hope otherwise, Slingerland realized prices just aren't there, in comparison to L-R-G et al. If you aren't planning to keep, $1500 pieced out is going to be a hard sell. 700 toms/bass 250 snare 100 ride 100 hats 50 crash is how I would calculate selling reality. The zildjian ride may bring a bit more if it is especially nice. Good luck my friend.

Hi Dean!

I believe the Slingerland kit you are considering is the cataloged "Super Rock Outfit No. 51N", which first appeared in the 1976 catalog. The listed measurements on that piece of paper are not correct. The actual sizes, as also shown in the catalog picture, are 9x13, 10x14 (which has 8 lugs per side), 16x16, 14x24 bass drum and a 6.5x14 Sound King COB snare drum. Check this link to see the drum set... https://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/catalogs/slingerland/1976_slingerland_catalog_25.jpg

The cataloged kit shows a 16x18 floor tom, but maybe the other kit does have a 16x16

I thought that too, and if that is the case (as a long time owner of a 51N). IMO the 16" is be a better blend with that kit than the original 18" would be.

Cheers
