P-87 a few more pics

Are those the original gut snares for the drum? They look too long for this system/drum.

In my experience (Super sensitives with gut), the brass ferrules on the gut strand should be crimped fairly close to the fine tensioning screws (butt end). Contact between ferrule and the brass thingy(?) attached to the screw allows the strand to be stretched.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to re-adjust them when they were assembled in a dry climate and the perhaps shipped to a humid climate.

I would adjust the snare adjustment knob to a position to a position just about at the mid-way point then adjust all the fine tuning screws (butt end) uniformly down to the half way point. Then, using needle-nose pliers, gently squeeze the brass ferrules 180 degrees from the original crimp and that should relax the grip on the gut strand enough to slide them down to a position of just touching the thingy on the fine tension screws. Then, re-crimp the ferrules in place. I have actually done this once, but was warned that the Ludwig ferrules can break after 2-3 adjustments.

Assuming I am correct about the overall length of these strands, you can trim off the excess gut. Just go slow and take your time.

My Coliseum had the No.1110 snare wires on it and there wasn't the type of overhang that you have pictured with your "gut" snares. See the attached catalog image for reference.

Is there a part number stamped on the snare plate?

Just how long are those snare wires and are they uniform in length?

Thanks for replying, guys. I measured the snares and from the metal plate at the throw-off end to the end tips of the snare gut wires is a whopping 17 1/2 inches. I cannot locate a number on the snare plate.

I may have made a terrible presumption that since the snares were with the drum and not ON it when received, that it belonged with it. I have no experience here, so captain obvious question, is that the wrong gut snares?

If so-now what?

Where do I get the correct snares? Available, hard to find, possibly more sticker shock? Even more painful is holding at 99% complete for a drum I thought I could get on the market ASAP.

Too much info won't bother me on the subject, as in all honesty, it's my first Luddy snare project and I am learning.

By the way, if you didn't see my earlier posts from a few weeks back, this project began with just the blue wrapped shell and lugs. The P-87 was in pieces and the gut snares came in the same lot box. So I'm financially in this for 2 Lud rims, collar screws, heads and a replacement P87 and butt plate.

A quick inter-web search shows that the Ludwig L-1108 12 strand synthetic gut system for a 14" drum with the P-87 strainer can be had to $88 bucks from Drumsonsale.com

Rut-roh is right! I had a look also. What I am now trying to find out is if this snare, when factory issued, had gut or wires. Do you guys know? From most pictures I can find, I can't see the bottom. Maybe 80s era non-marching snares had wires?

Hi Dean!

Since you've chosen to bring your drum back to life with the P87/P34 strainer/butt combination, you're really limited in what will work. If the drum were mine, I'd go with the 12-wire L1110 wires, rather than all gut or gut-wire combination. Yes, replacement wires will set you back quite a bit, but you'll be rewarded with a drum that is as it should be. I also agree with Mark.

Another solution would be to scour craigslist and ebay for a ratty, totaled, beat-up version of this drum with the snares still on them. It may take some time, but there might be a chance of getting the part you need for significantly less.
