Re-wrapping Tip on Seams

Loading...

Greetings,

Many of you may know about this and perhaps do this yourselves, but I found a quick and cheap trick on re-wrapping, when it comes to reinforcing seams: Paint Stirrers!

They are free at any local or big box hardware store (even if you are not buying any paint). I use two on top of each other for more rigidity/support and I typically go two wide as well. All you need are four stir sticks and four spring clamps. I usually leave it clamped for a few days, but that's completely up to you.

Stir sticks come in shorter lengths too (for quart cans). They can also easily be cut or trimmed to the length you need. Photo is a 14" x 14" floor tom. I hope this tip helps.

Enjoy!

Great idea!

However, our local Lowe's has stopped distributing free paint stirrers. Had to buy them yesterday.

Yes, a great idea! I never thought about paint stirrers and usually ended up cutting some wood to the length I needed. Now, I'll have to check my local Lowes and Home Depot to see if they are still free. As kdg mentioned, they're probably not anymore!

Also, you may consider a "yard stick" for this tip as well.

The 5-gallon bucket stirrers are even heavier. But, if you glue up a “T” structure before hand, it will be WAY stiffer and stay straight for you.

You can also make up a full length clamp with a couple (straight) 2X3’s, drill a half inch hole outside the tallest shell you intends to cover (probably 16” for a floor Tom), and some threaded rod, washers and coupling nuts. You can get serious clamping force with this rig. I made up something similar when I made guitars. My “bolt on necks” were a press fit into the body for better vibration transfer and to keep the neck in proper alignment.
