What Year is this Gretsch?

I wish I had the kind of life that would allow me to keep all these drums but alas I don't. Sorry if I offended anyone by putting this drum on ebay, however, I never asked how much it was worth. I love vintage drums and really enjoy the process of learning of their history. There's a deep bank of knowledge here in this forum and I appreciate that you have shared it with me.

I don't think anyone is really offended. We are always willing to help when we can.

It's all good. No one was offending. I believe the guys were making a point here...not directed at you (I don't believe). You just happened to of been the one that this surfaced with. I guess they were tiring of the flyovers and chose this moment to aire it out. Personally, I honestly don't know if I have an opinion on the subject. I'm just happy to have friends and drums at the same time. They don't usually travel hand in hand, what with all the noise they make. Kinda cool.

Ditto! I certainly took no offence. I'm just happy to be part of a community of vintage drum lovers. I did suggest that a voluntary donation might be in order when we use the forum to help with a sale, but I stress the word voluntary. Donation or no, I think we're all happy to trade knowledge and ideas. All's well!

As the instigator of this I confirm that mcjnic is correct--in fact very well said mcjnic.

Basically this is something I've been thinking about for awhile and I happened just to mention it here. Nothing directed at you and indeed you were kind enough to come back and thank people for the assistance they gave (or in my case attempted to give).

What bums me out a bit is that it's like 10 people or so who carry the site and it would be nice if there were more *regular* contributers. I see a ton of people come in, bring up interesting things, everyone responds, and we never hear from them again (copper mist Gretsch, etc) which is too bad.

My thought with the $5 nominal charge is that people would try to avoid it by posting more to avoid the "minimum 5 posts", and maybe find they get into the site and stick around for a bit.

PS: great moniker.

And now it's for sale on ebay. There must be 6000 VDF members with 2 posts to their name. Too bad there isn't a way to raise funds and charge $5 for someone with less than 5 posts and whose first question is of a what is this and what's it worth nature.http://cgi.ebay.com/50S-60s-GRETSCH-16-MIDNIGHT-BLUE-PEARL-FLOOR-TOM_W0QQitemZ220506364033QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintgae_Drums_Percussion?hash=item3357341881

Whats to say that the drum wasn't on ebay first.....before the question was posted to the forum? Maybe a question was asked of the seller and he didn't know, so came here for advice to let his potential customer know?

And xmas is right, he NEVER asked what is it worth.......

1) See what I wrote above. This really wasn't about Xmas.

2) Not really on topic, but as someone who actively monitors Ebay for a Gretsch floor tom I need, I can assure you that the drum wasn't up there first. But don't take my word for it, you can reverse engineer this from looking at when this thread started vs when the auction on Xbay started.

The thanks given by GTSX makes all the difference, in my opinion.

He did thank the forum after all, just not in his auction.

I don't agree with the $5 to post a first thread......if you do that you'll never get anyone new to come on here and post. However, if you come on here repeatedly and keep asking questions, yet never give any advice back....then a donation might be in order.

Anyone who has followed my postings on the forum might take a note.....I ask very few questions, but I do ask from time to time, i mostly give answers. Its called sharing the knowledge and educated the uninitiated. Should I be charged for that? I agree, david's site should get donations.....I intend to WHEN I CAN AFFORD TO, however, as everyone knows....times are a bit tougher now than they were a couple of years ago. So, in leau of donating money to the forum, I donate my knowledge. In essence isn't it basically the same thing?

Yes, the one or two time posters that you never hear from again can be annoying, but so can answering the same questions over and over again. This is why searching the forum first for answers is the best method, then and only then if the answer isn't there, then ask the question. Why do you think I started the brass supraphonic thread? (thank you for stickying that David :D ) That question over and over just annoys the crap outta me.....Cool Dude

Absolutely agreed. Donations should be voluntary and not mandatory. I see it like tipping the band. It's a community thing. Just like on the outside, we should look out for each other when we can. The knowledge of people on this forum is incredible! I learn something every time I log on. I'm going to send my donation soon. Hopefully, it will cover some of the cats who can't swing it right now. It's all good.
