It's never been a good-lookin a good looker with that extended 16" x 16 and the wine floor tom BUT that set is so easy to run in and run out of a gig with...whoa fantastic)
yea I bought a rail one night and put it on; had an extreme reach "Japan- knurled-L" arm for the small tom) in out done. but a..hope yours works out fine.

Hi all,Sorry if there is a thread on this I looked for and missed! Is there anyone out there with tips, tricks and experience with converting a 16x18 Gretsch floor tom to a bass drum? Any floor drum to bass drum really, but my mission is to create an authentic bop bass drum, and to that end I'm also looking at cutting this down to 14x18. (depth x diameter). I have a 14x14 and an 8x12 and I'm putting together a Gretsch Bop Kit.If I cut, I'm NOT cutting this down myself, I'm calling the Drum Doctor here in beautiful Toronto for that. I know all the arguments about preserving a drum for what it is, but my days of needing an 18 floor tom are gone and it's pretty much guaranteed this drum will be played by someone after I'm gone, as long as this crazy world keeps on turning. All feedback welcome!
If you take an inch off each end, cut new edges, After tuning, your head ring will rest about a quarter inch from the top of the lugs. There wont be one authentic thing about it.
All you will be doing is making a weird looking phony and removing one more 18" some rock drummer will need one day.
By no means am I suggesting or telling you what to do with your gear. In the name of vintage drum preservation, an authentic phony is pretty silly.

I didn't mean you, sorry, I could have been more clear.
I started out as a beginner with a Fat Albert kit,...Pretty close to the one in the cartoon. Moved on to white buckets by 72. When I got my SONOR kit, (77) that's all I ever needed. Still have it and it's in great shape too. Only changed the BD (80) because the small logo shook way too much with a tiny boat mount. Got the original in the closet.

I hear you Oddball. I might keep this uncut and and just play it as a bass drum for awhile, but keep the 18 diecast hoops in case I decide to pass it on. I play plenty of rock gigs and some of the music is pretty heavy but I get everything done with 14s and 16s.
And hey JDA, I love that kit man, some of the heaviest drummers I've ever seen play have sets that have character - like yours.
I saw Jonathan Blake play at the Vanguard a couple of years ago with Ravi Coltrane on a Sonor JUNGLE kit. And he was astounding. For example ;)
