Another follow-up post.
After being convinced that the Calftone heads were perfect and put them on all my drums, I've run into a problem with my floor tom drumhead. The sound just went flat. Like I was hitting a flat note. No matter how or where I tried to tune it, it wouldn't sound right. I tried everything, even re-tuning and changing the res head, but to no avail. Finally, in frustration, I put the G1 back on, and it tuned right up! No issues!
I've looked over the Calftone, and I can't see any issues, no delamination or separation or anything visible. I can't figure out what happened to it, but there is something definitely wrong. It's to bad, I really was digging the sound.
I can't say I wasn't warned, drumbob did warn me...DOH
Glad you were able to get the sound you wanted with the G1. I still feel that the Calftone is too warm for those thin luan shells and rounded edges. Also, it could have just been an issue with that particular Calftone head. Either way, glad to hear that it's all good now!

I have St George MIJ kit that is my go-to gigging kit. I use Aquarian Modern Vintage II's on the toms with ambassadors as the resonant heads. Also a Superkick 2 as the batter on the bass drum. They have a great feel and thuddy punch, but the tuning range leaves a little bit to be desired. I should also note I worked on the edges a bit on these drums, they were basically nonexistent when I acquired them, that will definitely be a big factor in your drums' sound.
It's the only set I use modern vintage heads on, otherwise it's Emperors and Ambassadors for everything.

St. George? Now that is an MIJ kit I haven't heard of. Very cool! Do you have pictures?
I'm glad you found the right drumheads for your kit. I'm kind of done experimenting for awhile. I don't have the energy, or the money, to start looking at Aquarian drumheads. My brain can only stand so much comparing! I've gone back to my Evans G1's, but I did change the res heads to Evans EC resonant heads and I am liking this package. And that's where it's staying for the foreseeable future!D' DrummerClapping Happy2
Jim, I don't want to say, "I told you so," but well...I told you so! LoLoLoLo
At some point, give Evans UV-1s a try on your toms. I'm getting great results with them.
