Painted Luddy restoration finally done :-)

Loading...

Hi there - some time ago I scored a 1971 Ludwig Super Classic kit - clear MPM interiors - 12, 13, 14, 22 and a Supra snare. But the shells were painted white and the hardware black. The shells were in great condition and so were the hardware. So I decided to give it a go at restoring. After hours of rubbing, scrubbing and polishing, I finally finished the job over the weekend and here are the before and after pics - I think they came out quite nicely!

Drums: Ludwig / Star / Tama / Yamaha
Snares: Arai /Mapex / Ludwig / Slingerland / Star / Tama
Cymbals: Meinl / Paiste / Tosco / Wuhan /Zildjian / Zyn

Fantastic restro. I had to do the same thing with a Rogers Butcher Block Wrapped kit. I used Goof off to remove the paint and a lot of elbow grease.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Great Job ! Beautiful set of drums ! Why in the world would someone prefer the altered before over the restored original ? Looks like the paint did not harm the wrap. They really came out stunning.

The eternal VDF question: what were they THINKING?

Beautiful restoration. One really must ask the eternal question when the wrap and hardware that was under the housepaint is so lovely!

Who knows, playing a lot of wedding gigs, and thought it looked "tuxedo."

Thanks guys. I actually know the guy who painted them - he was an adventurous teenager at the time, not realizing then that what he was doing was sacrilege:-) One day on a run, he told me about this kit that he used to have in a "mother pf pearl" wrap and that he painted it white as he thought it would look cool. I asked him where the kit was and he told me that he sold it years ago to a young scholar and he still had contact with his parents. I asked him to call them and ask whether they still had the drums - he called me and told me that (as is often the case and as I was hoping for) the son lost interest in the drums and the kit is in the way - I am free to make them an offer. I put in a cheeky offer of about the equivalent of USD 65 and they accepted - so for that I scored the shells, a painted Supra (which I am still in the process of restoring), a Speed King pedal and other bits and bobs. I can't believe that's the same set. You did a fantastic job. I remember when pearl finishes became so unpopular in the 70's that everyone was stripping shells to the bare wood and staining them, or just painting over the wraps. That's when all the catalogs started offering a variety of different wood grains and solid colors for wraps. Just following the trends I guess. And now all of us work hard "undoing" all the sacrilegious over-painting and stripping done by those dumb teenagers.

Thanks for saving one more vintage set from an undignified death. Nice job!

Fantastic Job! Looks like a brand new set!

I know the painted shells were a giant pain in your rear..........but they probably prevented the wrap from being faded/yellowed and kept them from being scratched or otherwise harmed.

Enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Its hard to believe that pearl finishes ever became so unpopular, that people would paint over them, but then again it was the 70 s, one of the worst periods for style there ever was!

Enjoy the hard work, they look great!
