The Most Recorded Snare

Well, Mr. BEC has not heard of or seen pictures of Radio King snare drums being used in 1960's. I guess that settles it. I have given up long ago trying to discuss with Luddy-huggers the possibility of other brands of drums being the be all and end all of drumdom. Gene Krupa popularized Slingerlands in the late 1930's after Bill Ludwig senior turned him down as an endorsed artist. If the premise of the new movie "Yesterday" was true, and no one had ever heard of the Beatles or Ringo, Ludwig drums would be just one of several very good brands of drums.

BEC didn't say it was settled, he just gave his perspective. Your question is still valid and no one said it isn't.

Hey, Luddy, Slingy, Rogers, and Camco aint got nut'n on SONOR. Nothing at all. If Buddy Rich played SONOR, it would be all over, If Bonham did too, it would be settled, When Ringo does, he'll never go back !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Define "recorded". If you factor in every junior high band concert that someone rolled tape at, the Acro might have a shot at the title. Otherwise I find it hard to imagine anything that would beat the supra just based on the shear ubiquity of the things.

Wouldn’t anything Earl Palmer played: (Dynasonic? or Blaemire?) give a large account for either?

I can't speak to which snare holds the recording record, but I can comment on general chrome snare use in the '60s and '70s. Having come of age in the '60s, living in Greenwich Village, and playing around NYC, my personal remembrances of the various chrome snares I saw in use is that by far the Supra was number one. I had a Supra as well. It was followed by the Slingerland chrome snare which I saw in use quite often. I saw very few Rogers chrome snares is use, perhaps two or three in the 17 years I lived in Manhattan. The Gretsch factory was in Brooklyn when I was growing up in NYC. and was still there for a number of years after I began playing, however, I don't recall ever seeing any Gretsch chrome snares in use. All of the Gretsch snares I saw in clubs like the Five Spot, the Half Note, the Village Vanguard, etc. were wood.

BosLover makes some very interesting observations. My hunch is that there were/are a lot of record producers and prolific session drummers like Blaine, Purdie, Palmer, Jackson jr, and others who preferred wood shelled snare drums on many tracks.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

From my own very limited experience in the studio, and from my late best friend, a recording engineer for two major recording studios in NYC during the '70s, most drummers recorded on set's already in the studio which had been carefully EQ'd by the recording engineer. Drummers generally did not just waltz in with their own kits,

Funny Post

BEC: Nice to see you haven't lost your sense of humor, even when your Ludwig expertise is being questioned. Because you are a recognized Ludwig guru, if you say the Supra was the most recorded snare, then the Supra was the most recorded. (although it should have been the Dynasonic! ;))

But you didn't record with the Supra yourself, did you? I thought you used wood shelled Ludwigs on your recordings with CT and also in concert, correct?

First two albums I used a 60's Super Sensitive.

Next three albums I used a 70's Supraphonic.

BTW, I never claimed ANY drum as the most recorded in any decade, I just said I've never heard/seen a wood Slingy drum in any pictures or recollections of sessions. Even Krupa had two Dynasonics dressed up in Slingy hardware.

And, on the sessions for the first half dozen Cheap Trick albums my spare snare drum was a Radio King. After miking it up, producers Jack Douglas, Tom Werman, George Martin, and Roy Thomas Baker all passed on the Radio King. True story, no BS......sorry leedybdp!
