Hi, After having a conversation today with someone about his Staccatto / North drums, I mentioned the drum I designed in high school back in '74. Same design as this except tapered at the 6" end, and only a batter head. Mounts onto the kick with the center cross-strut. Ludwig Jr. wanted to see a working prototype. Remo agreed to make a mylar head. One of my school mates, son of Dick Schory, tried to produce it under the name "Warp ll". It showed up on the Just Drums page in the back of Modern Drummer in January, just after I completed the prototype at college. I came up with this design, purely out of clumsy sticking across multiple toms. I have the drawings from my HS architectural class in storage. I made a 1:16 scale model with clear acrylic shells, which I still have as well. Ed Breckenfeld was excited to see my drum, so he called to congradulate me. . .but it wasn't mine. [mine was called the Unitom]. I don't know where I left the prototype. It also had mufflers to mute any cross-tones in the low end. I had no idea that it was already made in Germany [late 50's] by Karl. I can only imagine what it would sound like with a single calf head! Maybe I should make another.
