it's a good thing some of you guys are not coin collectors!
Exactly! I see the same thing happening all over the place with antique/vintage stuff. I bought a couple old Emerson fans that were made in the 1930s and the deeper I got into that market, the more my mind was blown in regards to the level of craftsmanship and design that many of them possessed. They were made to be serviced when they broke...by some small, locally-owned "fix-it" shop...and none of that exists anymore. The whole system of how things were done doesn't exist anymore.
Sometimes, there is intrinsic value to things that can only be determined by the seller. I have Ludwig drum sets that came from a time that harbored things like "The Summer of Love" and "Woodstock", free love and anti-war....and they just don't make ideas like those anymore, so there is value placed upon the objects which came from those old times. Civil War drums -same deal. They don't even sound "good" but they were played in a war when warfare was waged much differently....historically priceless....maybe. ;)
And it's going to be like this from here on with many, many "old" things -especially musical instruments because music is so reflective of the time it comes from.
When was the last time ANY of you has seen a complete, 1950's, 60's or 70's matched drum kit (other than a MIJ) in excellent condition? When was the last time you saw a Mod Orange kit or a Citrus Mist kit or a Ringo kit or even a bowling ball blue oyster kit for sale? How about a Slingerland Jet? Ludwig Jazzette? Downbeat? Buddy Rich kit (any brand)? Lemon Strata or Avocado Strata Standard kit? Octa-Plus? I used to see them every so often, several years ago....but not anymore! BUT, IF I see one (on some blue moon) then they are going to be stratospheric in price -guaranteed! About the most you can hope for now is to get lucky enough to find an orphan drum to complete an orphanage kit....and the day will come when you won't even find those anymore.
