Cymbalholic Site Closing down Last viewed: 37 seconds ago

From Drumaholic

Time for something to replace it, but in the meantime the place is here.But I must mention that I very much regret all the pains that I know I caused Chad and Patrice throughout my years of sometimes passionate defenses of unpopular stances like my anti-BIG Z tirades. Looking back now I now realize I would have done some of those things differently or not at all. And I still think very highly of Chad and Patrice. Chad is a stand-up and a stand out one of a kind type of righteous dude. And I hope Zenstat's medical issues get resolved. I would like to see him continue in his research. He's enriched us greatly with the body of knowledge that he's contributed in addition to his work in statistical analysis that has added another dimension our understanding .

You must be getting old. That sounded kind of like an apology. :)

And more importantly I did not realize Zenstat had medical issues. I certainly hope he's OK..

Get well soon Zen. Cymbalholic was a very special place for Jazz nerds and a great resource for all of us. It was such a shame to see all those historical threads disappear when they did and I’m sad to see the forum shut down. All the best to Chad and Patrice and all ‘Holics past and present.

I dont think the site has actually closed. My understanding is that you can still access the history but it is no longer functioning as a forum. No new posts. I can still bring up the site.

Chad 5/27/19

`````````````
I’ll try to make a place on the site/forum area where all you guys can be made aware of updates/plans, etc. as they happen. It feels very final right now, but there have already been small glimmers of new light toward *A* future. If we rise out of the ashes again, as we have before, I hope this time some of you will come back through and argue about gram weights.
Remember the days before gram weights or stamp distinctions/terms were thrown around? Before people were installing lathes in their basements or trying to modify their cymbals with hammers? How many brands and lines of cymbals were birthed during and throughout the span of time we existed?
I don’t recall how many other cymbal-specific online communities were built during our history.
I bet others surface now.
In any case, help others - be ambassadors and share/stand for what you’ve learned here or taught us here.
We were unique. We are unique. Didn’t Master Spizzichino himself state that unique is better than beautiful?
I remember how Wayne Shorter talked about Miles telling him to never wear your feelings on your shoulder….it’s corny. That’s hip, but challenging when you look at a set of people converging together, shaping a community for this long, literally witnessing the scope and/or end of generation(s)/lives.
Damn, all those years ago, I thought this would just be about cymbals.
Sometime during this next day I will log in to the administrator panel and take the first step toward what is to come.
Thank you all for giving so much and for being our friends…a beautifully unique “extended family.”
See you all soon.
.....Anyone ever leave a light on when you leave the house for a while?
Like it or not...Cymbalholics has been dying a slow death for years now..
So many of drummers (including myself..) left out of dissatisfaction with some of the more virulent site members..guys who probably never did a single gig in their lives..
That said..there were some good people still left there as well..
But when you have working drummers leaving by the droves..as well as the regulars..its just death by attrition..
How long can you have the same 5 to 10 members repeating the same old stuff to each other...year after year..
It became a site just for those guys..
But..
Chad did everyone a favor by ending it pronto..and now you can get back to your lives..lol..
I would think Cymbalholic is not ever coming back..and if it does..it will be even more gone than it was..
19 years was enough..and even though it was improved with new sections only a short while ago..and then..
The end..
Just goes to show..
When you divest yourself of most all of the good members..
There is simply nothing left..
Where did those members you speak of go EDL.
Most everyone on cymbalholic was a gigging active (over the near 20 year span) and or experienced drummer.
I can tho- think of 'another site' where the drums never leave the Living room , the size of the marine pearl is magnified , and the cymbals are hardly ever discussed dfo..
Cymbalholic was -is- (it'll return)- was a jazz orientated- player-orientated (themselves and legends) site.
In-depth- 20 page- Discussions of Ed Blackwell, Jon Christensen, Tony Williams, Max Roach, Al Foster, Elvin Jones, Barry Altschul ......(and their cymbals) proliferated were common there.
Old As, Old K, Istanbul, Paiste, Bosphorus, Spizzichino...every make big and small...past and present..findings discoveries and displays - were all common in posts and thread topics.
I don't see that (in 19 years) anywhere else ( a little bit here) but no where else.
I never saw any majority leave and if so where did they go.
It was it is- a cymbal-centric site.
Paul Francis posted. Head of Zildjian R & D. I don't see Mr Francis on any other site (excluding FB)
Paul Francis actually would correct and clarify - at Cymbalholic- some of the techniques (and misconceptions) that and what went into new design cymbals...
I haven't have never don't see another site like it.
Drumaholic gave it a great foundation and that foundation carried on (in his absence)- carried on by many of the early members. The template was laid down established by Chad, Drumaholic, Doc Polis, others; early on and it never changed.
Check how many threads going in-depth on a drummer say like Philly Joe Jones exist on another forum.
Yeah. (none)
This site VDF- is the only other that has had in depth ( hmm wonder why..) cymbal discussions.
I can't think of another. Others are majority all drums.
If anyone couldn't find a way to get their word - cymbal word or cymbal thoughts- in edgewise it certainly wasn't the sites fault .
I agree. Cymbalholc seemed to harbor intelligent discussions with less “people who think they know” then some of the others. Especially facebook, which is populated by a lot of wannabes and instagram which is fun for pictures but full of over inflated egos.
