Hey y'all.

Well I may have hit the jackpot. A relative is drummer who's been playing for years. He worked at Manny's way back when assembling drums. (Told me he actually put together a few sets for Buddy Rich, but I digress.)

Found out he had a 70s Ludwig bass drum he didn't want that had been sitting in his garage for 30 years. So I went by and he gave me a snare as well...

Well, the snare was a Trans badge Super Ludwig. (I assume that, cause they definitely didn't make Supras in Trans badge right?) In pretty beautiful condition outside of missing 1 tension rod and the tone control.

So I ask y'all, anyone know where to get the proper tone control for the drum? Should I just buy a modern P40662? I noticed someone selling tone control knobs that are 3/4'' and appear to be the small knob style. Should I get one of those and combine it with a modern one to get the proper outside look?

Also, does anyone know how to get stains off a trans badge?

P.S. Anyone know where to get a single (LoLoLoLo) tension rod that is era appropriate?

The smaller round knob and red felt muffler is correct for that drum , great snag you will have fun with that snare

Was the smaller round knob made with red felt? I have a trans badge set with the smaller badge and they all have a large, round, blackish grey felt inside.

The trans badge Super 400s came with 3/4" round knob mufflers with round black felt. They can be a little hard to find sometimes. If you can't find the correct one, Ludwig used another 3/4" round knob in the late 60's on some Acrolites an Supraphonics. A modern tone control would work but would be a 1" knob. Place a wanted ad here or on FB. Someone will have one for you. Good luck!

The only noticeable difference is in the physical appearance. The threads are still 12-24. All of today's tension rods are made in Taiwan, with a few exceptions. Back in the day of US drum makers, tension rods were specific to the company. I can usually tell the difference between Ludwig, Rogers and Slingerland tension rods! Today, they all pretty much look the same!

In completely other news, just actually decided to look at the bass drum. A 1969 B/O virgin 26'' (maybe 25.5?'') blue sparkle bass drum. So that's cool. :D

It would be either a 24 or a 26" drum...no 25.5" ones made...although that might be the exact measurement of a 26. Shells are just a bit undersized.

I don't advocate harvesting parts off drums but if you can find a cheap Ludwig Standard tom it would have the right type (or very close anyhow with the smaller knob) of knob muffler on it and also the tension rods would be Ludwig if original. You could likely remove the muffler, swap out some rods with some new ones, and resell the thing for what you paid for it, or nearly so. Standard drums are getting more expensive of late though and finding one that still has the muffler on it might be another trick but if luck went your way you might be able to score the parts for nearly free.

Not a bad idea at all! Is there any chance you have a picture of the tone control knob on your Super from the side? I've found one that seems like it should be right but also doesn't. My trans badge jazz fest has a round knob that tapers to a smaller diameter on the backside. I've found one that appears to maintain its diameter and possible get a tad bit larger. I'd like to figure out which is correct.
