Ludwig 1123-1 Hi Hat Question

Loading...

Just got some good pictures using my "real" camera and not my iPhone! The stand is my 1124 Atlas, but I also have an 1123-1, both in excellent condition!

I've included a crude drawing to show the overall dimensions of the sleeve. Not shown is that the inside diameter, to allow the rod to pass through, is 1/4". You could make this sleeve without the larger diameter top portion, which is there only to keep the felt and metal washer from coming off when then stand is taken apart. Hope all this helps!

Mark,

There’s a brass inner ring inside the top tube at the opening. I would say that the clearance on both sides of the upper rod is closer to 1/32” rather than 1/16”, as you mentioned. Perhaps the upper rod on mine is non-standard and uses more space than it should.

I had to use a fair amount of force to tap mine in place, so I don’t want to take it apart again.

Hi Josh,

The 1/16" I mentioned is the wall thickness of the longer section of tube. The hole diameter to allow the rod to pass through is 1/4". Ludwig uses a narrow rod compared to other makes, but if it is the original rod, it should easily pass through a 1/4" opening.

In regards to that brass ring you mentioned, my 1124 stand also has this. It's used as a stop for the nylon sleeve and should be about 3/8" down in the tube. I removed my sleeve by gently turning it with a pair of pliers and a rag, while pulling down on the tube. You can see that ring below the opening of the cymbal seat.

You've done an excellent job of making your own sleeve, so all this may be a moot point. I just wanted to supply pictures and a diagram for others that may have this issue.

So Mark, I think I am losing my mind on this:

Can you do me a favor. Look at the first photo I posted. It shows the brass-colored liner I was talking about. It actually protrudes slightly from the top of the top tube. Is this brass colored liner what you removed from your hi hat with pliers? If so, is mine supposed to be recessed inside the top tube?

Also, looking at your nylon insert, it appears to have been inserted into your top tube further than the 3/8” you mentioned. Does your nylon insert fit over or inside your brass-colored liner?

Sorry if I’m making a mountain out of a mole hill, but I can’t see how the nylon insert you showed could fit in my hi hat.

Thanks for your patience.

I have lots of these stands and the bottom cymbal seat and sleeve were almost always missing when I acquired them. Here's what I did:

I simply cut about 1" off the top of the bottom tube, the side where the sleeve was that has the brass fitting on the inside. Make sure you cut it down far enough so don't run into that brass bushing!

I then just put this on the tube.

https://www.drumfactorydirect.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=9045

It's an exact fit around a 5/8" tube, which is what the 1123-1 uses. It's a little goofy looking, but fits perfectly, and it's less than $5. There are other aftermarket hi hat seats available, but NONE of them (except that Pearl shown above) fit around a 5/8" tube. To the best of my knowledge, the other Pearls, the Gibraltar and the "generic" ones that are available are all for 3/4" or 1/2" tubes. You can, if necessary, use the Gibraltar one shown here:

https://www.drumfactorydirect.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=6192

You just have to wrap the top of the tube with some duct tape or nylon tape to make the diameter bigger, because it's made for 3/4" tubes. I've used them before as well by measuring how far down on the tube the seat will go (mark it with a Sharpie), then cut the duct tape or nylon tape to that exact width, then just wrap the top of the tube with the tape and then pound the seat on with a rubber mallet. Still holding fine years later and it doesn't show at all , because the seat covers it.

I know lots of us folks want to keep things as original as possible, and I do as well most of the time. However, there are certain instances where the original was just a poor design or a pain in the rear, and to me, this is one of those instances.

Whatever route you choose...........Good Luck!

V,

That looks like a good option. And I did just that with a 1930’s Slingerland hi hat which had nothing at all at the top of the tube. Except, the one-piece cup was from an ‘80’s Slingerland Magnum hi hat that was broken.

For now, I’ll stick with my whittled-down nylon sleeve. But thanks!

Hey Josh!

I'm really confused as to what you are describing! I checked both my 1124 and 1123-1 upper tubes and both of them have the brass ring down in the tube, by at least 3/8". The only thing that protrudes from both my tubes is the flared-over metal that attaches the tube to the round metal disc that holds the round flat metal washer and felt washer. That other brass ring should be visible down inside the tube. It's only function is to serve as a stop for the white nylon sleeve. However, the insertion of the nylon sleeve is a friction fit, so even without the brass ring in the tube, the sleeve would still stay tight. You'd just have to be sure you don't insert it too far down!

I'd really have to see your tube to determine what's going on. I know you're really scratching your head over this one, but at least you made your own sleeve that is working perfectly!

The Gibraltar seat assembly that V mentions is a perfect fit for any hi hat stands that use a 5/8" upper tube. This includes Ludwig, Rogers and Slingerland!

Here are some pictures of a Slingerland "Jet" kit I had some years back. I used the Gibraltar seat on the 804 hi hat stand. Worked great!
