So the "barn" was actually a nasty garage below a duplex, but I'm posting the story to remind the VDF members that great deals on vintage drums are really still out there!
I have had some luck finding gear on the Letgo app in my area recently. I think that the app makes it so easy to click a pic and post an item, that people do it without much forethought. In fact the image recognition in the app will even create a title for the listing automatically. This kit was auto-titled just Black and Grey Drums $200 Negotiable. The one and only poorly lit photo was of the drums stacked up in a dark dirty corner. When I zoomed in and saw a few pixels of a blue and olive badge, it was all I needed to make the 20 min drive to investigate.
The kit turned out to be a 70's 12,13,18,22 stainless wrap, clear interiors, close badge numbers, no extra holes, no rust, no pitting, and the stainless is cleaning up very very nicely. The only negatives are the missing reso side tom rims, front bass hoop and claws, and one bass spur. Like many of the era it was played concert tom style, and those parts were lost along the way. But, to make up for it, the deal did include a tubular B/O hi hat stand, and a nice 80's Pearl steel shell snare with stand and carry bag. All for $150...after all, the ad said it was negotiable:)
By the time I hunt down the missing bits (PM me if you have any of them) and put some new heads on it, I will have to spend more than the cost of the kit, but I think I'll still end up way ahead.
Anyway, it is worth downloading the Letgo app and making it part of your daily searches. I'll post pics when I finish getting it cleaned up.
Happy Easter everyone!
