He went from wood to acrylic, Why do you think? Or was it Ludwig that said that he should use clear drums??
In your opinion why did Bonham start playing vistalites?
When they came out I believe he Used them73/76 then the ss kit-was his fave I bet
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp
once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
He only used them live, from 1973-1975. I believe it was because they sounded huge and were trendy and eye-catching. I'm sure Ludwig suggested he use them.
Currently looking for a 3-ply 24x14 Ludwig in champagne sparkle w/rail consolette and cymbal mount!

This is also what I feel is true. I think that John was intrigued by the Vistalite (acrylic/plexiglass) concept and figured he'd give them a try. Probably the same for the stainless steel kit...and the fact that he most likely didn't have to pay for these "experimental" kits! Truth be told, I think that John really liked his wood-shell kits the best. Regardless, John made all of them sound great!

Agreed, which is why he never used the Vistalites in the studio. Although he might have used the stainless kit...

He could make anything sound good, even a steering wheel. Promotional, percussion promotion. As for the SS kit,...Nobody will walk away from one.

Probably many people behind that decision, such as the Ludwig reps wanting to showcase their new product, as well as the company that produced Zeppelin's stage show. Vistas are visually pleasing under lights.

Haha!- - probably the same reason I bought a set ( amber vistas in the same config.)- They LOOK cool- they rumble the room... and miked they are thunderous.... not for the music of today unless you 'tame' them with head changes/ but- imagine- if you got a set FREE from Ludwig..... would you use it (given it was the psychedelic 70's)? I sure would....
...(p.s.- never had a LARGER bass drum sound than a big vista w/a black dot...)
