Is this a Buddy Rich model snare?

Hello all. Question for y'all about a snare I've owned and played for years. I bought this snare for $40 from a lady on the sidewalk outside of a pawn shop in Crown Point, Indiana back in the mid-90s. She was on her way into the pawn shop to see what they'd give her for it. But that's a story in and of its own...

ANYWAY, she's probably the best sounding and most versatile snare in my collection. 5.5x14, COB hoops, white interior dated 1963, red felt muffler. I've always just enjoyed her live and in the studio and have received many compliments on her sound. However, I've never really questioned what model she is. From what I've read, she may be a Buddy Rich, and I'd be interested in confirming that.

SO, any input y'all have would certainly be appreciated. Drum on!

Beautiful drum it is!, but it's not a Buddy Rich .. technically .. because Buddy split WFL/Ludwig for Rogers in 1960. Your drum being a 1963, well ... you know. However! ... the shell and hardware are the same, although the butt should be the P88 with fully extended wires which yours is not ... but otherwise it is very close to the model Buddy was playing while he was with WFL, so in that respect, it's very close ... just not a Buddy Rich in the actual sense. Here is a 1955 WFL Buddy Rich out of my BR snare drum collection/history. You can see they certainly share the same build and traits, but in the case of your drum, not the name. However, a rose by any other name is still ... a rose!

Thank you TommyP! Great info. Your '55 WFL is outstanding! Question about the lug casings: Your bowties seem to be more 'rounded' on the corners than mine. Was this one of the transition elements...going from more rounded corners on the lug casings like yours to more sharp/angular corners like mine? I like being knowledgeable about those subtleties....like the spacing between the lines/planes on the sides of the very early '60s Imperial lug casings on the COB Super-Ludwigs vs. those found on the Supras from the mid-'60s on up.

You know, when it comes to Buddy Rich and his endorsements, snare drums, sets, cymbals, etc., well, I have been researching all of that for decades! But as to small changes in the actual manufacturing such as the Bowtie lugs in this case, one of the extremely knowledgeable Ludwig guys will probably know! By the way, I meant to put this in the previous reply ... the name of your model drum is the "Super Classic".

OldSchool-your observation on the lugs is right on track. The Wfl lugs are indeed more rounded on the edges compared to the Ludwig bowties. Good eye!
