Cutting a bass drum head

From OddBall

I`ve never had a coated BD reso.

There's no oil in a clear emporer. I think you're imagining oil, just as you imagine you can out play Buddy on the hats.DOH

Exactly - You're never going to be able to replace that head, so why cut it?The Rogers logos are widely available, so use whatever head you like on the drum but preserve the original head. just my $.02

I have one of those heads in my pile of heads, how does it sound?

Thank you!

Hi Jeff. I am looking for an XP 8 logo head 22” if you got one. I prefer clear with or w/o the sound “dot”.

Thanks!

Just have a drip pan ready to catch the oil when you cut the head.

I'm just curious what kind of oil that might be in an Emperor, motor oil? Vegetable oil? Or perhaps it's Brylcreem.Coffee Break2

The myth of oil between the layers of some drum heads like Emperor seems to come from a misinterpretation of Newton's rings or Moiré patterns appearing because of optical interference between the two layers on clear heads. It's just optical physics folks. Then there are the Evans hydraulics in Black and Red which are supposed to have oil. http://www.evansdrumheads.com/EvProductDetail.Page?ActiveID=3567&productid=434&sid=41999805-04d5-402d-843a-11bd18ce08b6Their web site suggests the Hydraulics Clear don't have the oil. Is that really the case?

Johhyringo sure knows how to stir things up. All we gotta do is teach him how to spell emperor correctly.

I don`t think it`s a myth at all. There is a lubricant in between the layers. They would rub themselves blurry without it.

If I had an extra one I`d cut it. I`ll be shocked if there wasn`t.

Ha, ha, spell check changed it, didn't even notice, but to make you happy, there's no oil in an EMPEROR.
