Cutting a bass drum head

From OddBall

The hole thingy is cool and all, but only for single ply heads. If you have something like an Emperor batter, good luck.

Why would it not work for a 2 ply?

Oh it`ll cut it. But I see oil leak and clapping without that ring thing put on it. That ring thing is a head killer.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Oil leak? An Emporer is just 2plys of plastic to make it more durable. I've cut Emporers with one of those blades, cuts through like butter.

It gets on your fingers. I`m not opposed to it just think single ply is a better port because you don`t need a port ring if you don`t want one.

The 2ply goes dead quicker. Specially if MM is in there. That`s why I did it.

There's no oil in a 2ply coated Emporer.

There's no oil in a 2ply coated Emperor.

The myth of oil between the layers of some drum heads like Emperor seems to come from a misinterpretation of Newton's rings or Moiré patterns appearing because of optical interference between the two layers on clear heads. It's just optical physics folks.

Then there are the Evans hydraulics in Black and Red which are supposed to have oil.

Their web site suggests the Hydraulics Clear don't have the oil. Is that really the case?
