Dating This Ludwig Kit

GaryI would consider re-wrapping that one due to the seam on top of the bass drum, how stupid. Nice score though, for next to nothing.

Hi, Mark! Great to hear from you, as always! I'll DEFINITELY be re-wrapping this one. I always look for a "winter project" to work on and this kit will be this year's. You know, if a prior owner did actually strip the paint from the interior shells, as some here suggest, it would seem even more bizarre to me. Why go through all the effort and time for that? It seems totally senseless.

That makes about as much sense as those who paint the interior black. I had Leedy kit that had been painted black, it was well done, but they painted all the interiors black as well. I've seen other kits that had the original wrap, but again the interiors were painted black. It's mind boggling what people will do to ruin a vintage kit.

I'm with the others on thinking the interior paint was stripped. The double tom arm is a Rockers model, made from the early 90's through the mid-2000's I believe, even though the Rockers series was discontinued long before that. Were there any extra holes on the bass drum that got wrapped over?I'm not a Ludwig expert, but it seems to me if the kit is a later 60's like the others have said, wouldn't the kit most likely have had a rail mount? I'm not sure when Ludwig started using the 1" tom post with the diamond shaped bracket on the bass drum. It also seems that with the "gull wing" spurs that would indicate the probability of a rail mount. I can't say I've ever seen a vertical post tom mount on a Ludwig kit with the gull wing spurs, but I know there are always exceptions, especially with Ludwig. Were there holes for a cymbal bracket/arm?As an aside, I agree about being clueless enough to leave the wrap seam on top. Also, if you're going to re-wrap a vintage Ludwig kit, why choose gloss black? By the far the most common and boring wrap color available. Yes, I know it looks classy on some drums (kind of like a tuxedo), but it just doesn't seem to fit a vintage Ludwig kit.

The center post double tom mount was introduced in the early 60s so there are plenty of sets with a center post and the fold out spurs. The actual tom holder continued to evolve thru the 60's but retained the 1" diameter post all the way thru to today and any modern post using a 1" tube can be utilized with the bass and will interface with the tom brackets if it has 9.5mm arms installed, which is apparently what happened here. The early five piece sets tended to have two 12 ( or 13") toms mounted on the bass drum and it took a few years for the idea of having two different sized toms on the bass to take hold.

I finished the "project" last week and thought that I"d share a few pics. I was trying to create a unique vintage yet classy look with this one. Hopefully, I at least came close to achieving that goal (lol).
