Ludwig Student Snare, early 1960s

Loading...

Good morning!

I have a friend who is thinking about selling his 1960s Ludwig snare to me. I haven't see photos of it yet, so I'm not sure what model it is or what condition. But I wanted to open a thread to figure out a fair price.

From his description, this sounds like a beginner band snare drum: Ludwig, chrome, with the hard plastic case and chrome stand. What model snare drum did most beginner band students buy?

Thanks!

Acrolite most likely but we need a picture when you can.

Keep fixing them up...

Most likely an Acrolite, which will be a great snare. You never know though - I answered a Facebook ad for a "student" snare drum for $75 that turned out to be a Ludwig Supraphonic from the mid-1970s! It's pristine and sounds amazing.

I 5th grade back in the 70s, my mom bought me a used student Ludwig to use in concert band. It was a Supraphonic that came in the tombstone case with red velvet lining. Wish I still had it.

It`s more like What metal options were there.

The School fest and Pioneer were very popular for students, but wood shells. The Acro was one of three or four metal models.

A follow-up, I've attached the photos. The snare is wood, not metal, and it's been stored in the garage for years. The owner said it was a "Ludwig Snare Orchestra Batter" but I suspect he's reading the head.

Any thoughts? Thanks everybody!

Nice! Looks like a '68 Pioneer in White Marine Pearl. This is the year that Ludwig switched from painting their interiors white and going with the clear maple interiors. Good stuff!

Also, this was Ludwig's top of the line shell from this period. They just drilled the shell for 8 lugs on the Jazz Festival model instead.
