Bought a cymbal sound unheard--Maybe a Super Zyn?

Loading...

Greetings,

Took a chance on a cymbal on ebay. No make noted and can't see a stamp from the rather low quality photos (See below). At the very least I figured it's B20 Bronze from the looks of it. Could be an A. Zildjian too. I figured it was worth taking a chance on for my winning bid of $41.

First off, it was described as an 18" Symbol, LOL. It could be an 18", but from the photos it seems to be more 20 or 22-ish, especially the photo of it on the couch, no?

The reason I am maybe thinking Super Zyn is that in all three photos, especially photos 2 and 3 it appears to have a slight downturn at the edge of the cymbal, almost like those Sabian Sound Control Crashes. I have a 22" Super Zyn that I found at an old Mom & Pop music store years ago that I love, and it has a pretty distinct downturned edge also. Maybe it's just the lighting or the photos, but it looks like a downturned edge to me. My Super Zyn is also pretty A. Zildjian-esque looking, and this one fits that bill too.

What do you think? Any guesses on the brand or even it's size? It shipped out yesterday and it's coming from Philly and I am in SW Ohio, so I should get it before the weekend. I'll post more photos when it arrives.

It's not possible to positively say whether the alloy is B-20 judging it from a photo because the lighting conditions can make even NS-12 look a lot like B-20. But I do agree that it looks like a Zyn of some type, possibly a Super or maybe a 3 star. Although Super Zyns can look a lot like Avedis, the down-turned edge combination with the lathing style that I can see, makes the possibility of its being a Zildjian unlikely in my opinion. I do believe that this is not a 22" though. I'll go with 18". I'll be curious to know what it finally turns out to be when it arrives.

I'm agreeing with Drumaholic. It could be British. I've had a few Super-Zyns over the years. I've one or two left, one of which is a 20" with a huge dome-like bell on it. I've had others which had smaller bells and I've had Super Zyns in really oddball sizes. The other one I have at the moment is 14 6/8". I've been searching high and low for another cymbal that size so I can use it as a Hi Hat. In my experience they come in all shapes and sizes, so it's difficult to know if this is a Super Zyn.

This could turn out to be an OK cymbal. It's certainly not brass. I would say it's either NS12 or B20. It looks well made, so it might be decent.

No, I still don't have it. According to the tracking info, the label was created and USPS got the tracking number on Tuesday Jan 29th, but it was not in USPS possession until yesterday Feb 4th. Looks like the guy created a shipping label online and then waited six days to actually take it to the post office. LAME!! However, I know the USPS was shut down for a couple of days in certain areas because of the Polar Vortex, but that still wouldn't explain why it didn't get dropped off at the Post Office by the seller for six days.

Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow, Wed the 6th.

Here's a pic of a Krut with a huge dome-like bell on it. This one was NS-12 and trashy, but in a good way. I agree that the OP's "symbol" looks like a Zyn/Krut/Super Zyn or something from that family. I've had other with that pronounced bend.

Thanks for the reply, funkyp.

Man that cymbal looks like one of those Carmine Appice Lampshades!

I'll be checking the mailbox today for sure.

I love that Premier kit in the photo. Very classy looking. Also, that is one big rack tom!

I'm hoping the cymbal comes today. I'm gigging tonight (I'll throw it in the bag if it comes) but I hope to make a short video to share with you.

Thanks Vyacheslav. Wish I still had it. The 12" mounted tom was a custom order bt the original order. These Birch Artist kits came with a 10" mounted tom by default. You can here both the Krut and the Premiers here: [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_96f0b91WM"]Do wath yu wanna do - YouTube[/ame]

Sorry, the video title should say " Do Watcha Wanna" .

The Krut is my left-side cymbal & due to its intense nature I play it sparingly, buy you can hear it at around 2:09.

Have a great gig! And say hi to your postal employee!

Nice video funkyp! Great playing as well!

Well, I did receive the cymbal just in time for the gig last night. The verdict is in......................

It is indeed a Zyn Made I England. It also looks to be NS-12. It is an 18".

It's pretty light at 1276 grams (I weighed it and wrote the weight on the cymbal). It had the small center hole that I widened with a step bit to fit on my gigging stands. It has a pretty defined stick and makes for a biting crash. Honestly, as thin as it is, the crash is a bit harsh for my tastes, but sounds good as a light ride. It also VERY high pitched, especially for as thin as it is. I expected an extreme dome shape for as high pitched as it is, but it seems to have an average, "normal" profile. If I had to characterize the sound, I would say it would be what one of those Bill Stewart Dry Complex Rides sounded like if they ever made an 18", but without the complexity of the overtones. There is also a very defined "line" towards the edge of cymbal that you would think means it would taper down like I originally thought, but it stays pretty true, and is only just slightly turned down. It's easier to feel with your finger than it is to actually see.

I am off to yet another rehearsal, but I plan to post a short video/sound file of the cymbal either later tonight or tomorrow.
