Rogers Big R snare

Loading...

As someone who is getting more familiar with Rogers drums (thanks in particular the ploughman), what makes this snare so special? And so expensive? According to the Rogers dating guide this appears to from late 1981 to 1982 with the RD97xxxx S/N. Is this a Dyna-Sonic? Hard to tell with the one pic. I see most of the Dyna-Sonic, Super 10 and XP-10 snares are real expensive. Most times much more than the Slingerland RK/Artist single ply maple (or most any other Slingerland snare) or most Ludwig snares. Is it the small number of Rogers (script or Big R) that are available??

Just some thoughts/observations if any one wants to weigh in...

Not a bottom Dyna rim on it, so suspect it is a XP10.

Have seen them selling for about 1/2 asking price, but always accepting less on offers is easier than asking more after the offers.

The maple XP10 and Dynasonic model snares came in 5", 6-1/2", and 8" depths, with the 8 as the most common.

Way overpriced.

You can buy Big R kits for that price or one of the new wood Dyna reissues.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking the same thing..thanks! I just bought an XP-8 (4) pc for about 1/2 that. Just wondering why the Rogers snares (as a whole) sell or advertise for so much more. I have never owned a Rogers snare. But, I guess if they sound as nice as the rest of the set...it would be worth it...possibly...

Neither hoop on this drum is rogers. This drum is from approx. 1981. One picture doesn't make for the sale price. You cannot see the actual condition of the finish. Nor do you know anything of the internals.

Prices for an 8x14 have been in the 700-1000.00 range for the past year... and they have sold. 6.5x14... would be 800-1100. A 5 x14... 900-1200. And they have sold. Of course on any given day some knucklehead what doesn't know anything about anything will put one of these up for 300.00 because it is just... an old drum. With an ugly badge. Like I said...they have been selling high. Primarily.. the rarity. The 8x14 is the most common size in these XP10 Ten Ply All North American Maple Keller shell snare drums. The 5x14 is the rarest. Only a few dozen known. FEW means exactly that. FEW. Like two or three dozen in the 5x14 size. Those who think they are over priced, don't have one, probably don't want one. And wouldn't pay more than 200 for anything. These drums were offered as a Dyna-Sonic and as a SuperTen conventional snare drum. Prices for both are the same. No kick extra for a Dyna-Sonic, and no penalty for a SuperTen.

My collection includes two 6.5x14 Dyna-Sonics with consecutive serial numbers, and a 6,5x14 SuperTen made for Gina Schock of the Go-Go's. It is inscribed by the production manager of Rogers, January 26, 1983, and by the artist, in 2012.

Sweet, Jack! Thanks again for the insight/opinions/information, you are truly the man when it comes to knowing things Rogers! I love the collection of those Rogers snares! I never realized the rarity of them. Because you can still get most of the mid-later 70s (Big R) drums reasonably "cheap", very similar to the Slingerlands price range, within reason. But, supply and demand! I am still hunting for a Rogers snare, probably 6.5 x 14, hopefully Dyna-Sonic and hopefully silver sparkle. I have (3) Slingerland snares, and I want to put the Rogers with the Rogers set..

Thanks again sir!

I fully recommend the New Issue rogers Dyna-Sonic snare drums. Awesome drums. Either lug choice. Both are rock solid.

Yessir. I have my eye on the 6.5x14, silver sparkle/glass glitter. Just waiting for them to drop down in price, even a little!

Thanks again--
