Strange Slingerland snare.

I have an older Slingerland snare with an odd lug configuration. It is a solid mahogany shell that originally had a chrome veneer. It was in bad shape, so I removed it to find the beautiful mahogany underneath. It also has a 12 lug (I assume a field drum) rim on the batter side, and a 6 lug (I assume a student) rim on the snare side. I have been told by one person that this is an end of run drum that was built with leftover stuff from a regular production run. Does anyone know if that is feasible? It has Slingerland lugs, rims, and snare throwoff. Originally had a plain badge (no serial number), but somewhere it has gone missing. May have been destroyed (unfortunately) when I removed the original veneer (which, in retrospect) I should maybe not have done. But, it was in terrible condition. Anyway...can anyone give me any info on this drum?

old thread i know but i have a friend that wants to get rid of his 2-1 copper snare. What should i offer him to be fair???

Hello Bloodsloddy... and Welcome to the forum! This is the Two-to-One snare drum, which first appeared in the 1979 catalog and only offered for a few years. 12 lugs over 6 lugs. Not a popular design! They are rare because not many were sold. Remember, rare does not always mean high priced!Definitely not an end-of-run drum! Just another attempt by Slingerland to offer something different. I've heard the drum was inspired by Louie Bellson.I'm very surprised that the badge you removed would have no serial number. Your shell would be 5-ply. Odd that the outer ply is mahogany, as these 5-ply shells were maple/poplar/maple/poplar/maple. Regardless, Slingerland did use good quality mahogany, so I'm sure your drum looks very nice! Here's a link to the drum from the 1979 catalog... http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/catalogs/slingerland/1979-slingerland-snaredrums1.jpgEnjoy your Two-to-One!-Mark

drumfx, that serial (456xxx) would be expected to be 1980. Your drum is the "lacquered brass" shell 2 to 1 model. Listed in the '79 catalog on the VDG and in K.O.'s earlier post in this thread. Per DrCJW the lacquered brass shells had a high copper content and are sometime mistaken for bronze or copper. It is in fact Slingerlands "lacquered brass". Hope that helps.
