slingerland added badges to toms in... 1965? What about tone controls?...

Loading...

There are three slingy tone controls that I know of.

1) dual pad small knob

2) single pad small knob

3) single pad large knob (70s)

when did they go to the small knob/single pad style? Early 60's?

Also what year did they start putting badges on toms? Was it 1965?

Not sure on the tone controls without looking it up but I have a set of 65's without tom badges. I believe the badges on toms started in 1966.

Per Dr CJ Wenk:

Two pad tone controls to end of '61. Single pad small knob j-hook introduced '62.

NO badges on toms until June '66.

bp350 is correct about badges and air vents on toms being introduced in 1966.

As for the tone controls, the transition from dual-pad to single-pad was around late 1961 to early 1962. I've seen a combination of both single-pad and dual-pad mufflers on these drums. As is always the case, Slingerland used up the existing supply of dual-pad mufflers first, unless there was a request to use only the single-pad muffler. But, back then, did we really care what muffler was on the drum?!!

1966 is correct, but I have a Modern Solo Outfit stamped March 1966 on the floor tom, and all toms have the copper script badge.

Yes, I have notes on your kit (from a previous thread) as there are some interesting anomalies.

The 8x12 rack tom has a serial number consistent with a late '66/early '67 build date. The 9x13 rack tom has a serial consistent with a '67 build date. Neither of these drums has a date stamp. Both toms have the "weak milk chocolate" stain which Dr CJ Wenk says started in Oct. '66. It makes sense that these two toms have badges as indications are that these are post June '66 drums.

The 16x16 floor tom is puzzling. It has a date stamp of March '66 yet the serial number is one which is normally associated with '65.

Even more strange is that this drum also has the "weak chocolate milk" stain which didn't start until Oct. '66. Slingerland date stamped the shells when they were formed. Wrapping and assembly occurred later. Is it possible a March '66 shell was not assembled until June or even October of '66? Sure. Is it possible a '66 drum could have a serial normally associated with '65? Yes.

Not to be conflictive; I have a 8x12 tom with a chicago badge that is stamped 1962. I suspect that simply when the shell was made, but with that said the bass has a niles no serial badge; also stamped 1962. Kind of interesting.

jbohan6, the bass with no serial Niles badge and '62 date stamp makes sense. Your 8x12 with Chicago badge and '62 date stamp would not be expected. Which Chicago badge? Does the badge grommet appear original and unmolested? What is the month on those two date stamps?

I'm not a Slingy expert by any means but I thought that toms did have badges up to a point, then they stopped installing them for a few years before adding them back in the mid 60's.

Never mind, just looked at the late 50's tom I have that I thought had a badge...and it doesn't.
