Clubdate floortom bracket repair/fabrication

Loading...

Call me a cheapskate, but I can't get onboard with spending $100 on what essentially amounts to some bent metal, a rod and, a spring.

So I went to my local Ace hardware, and bought 2 32" stainless steel rods, a length of welding metal and a couple springs.

Using a small bench vise, ballpeen hammer, hacksaw, files, and an electric drill, I spent a couple of hours and I now have functional clubdate brackets.

The spring and clipper on the left is the original, the right clipper was fabricated.

I reversed one of them so it would face inward on the backside of the floortom.

Genius! Great work. I love good, ol' fashioned ingenuity!

Looks just as good, if not better, than the originals.

I have to say, that is the worst bracket design! Not sure what Ludwig, Premier and some of the other companies were thinking back in the day when they designed those.

Yeah, the springs sometimes resonate, and the legs are incredibly close to the rims. Not a great design.

Great job! I agree, not a great design, but then again, who knew we’d be cherishing these drums 50+ years later?

I have a set on a 14x14 that had that bracket egged out. I used my Dremel to grind the rolled over edge away, smooth the bore again, and they worked like new again, and still do! Only that small of a bit works and keeps from damaging any of the chrome. The smooth bore with the sharp edge is what holds the leg.
