Sleeping Beauty

Never thought it could happen, but it did... got a call from a friend of mine, who said, the mother of one of his former students wants to sell their drumkit. he (my friend) didn't want it and didn't really know what it was, so he told me to go over and check if i might need it.

So i drove over (15km) and what did i see when i arrived at their place: a Sonor Force 2000 (well that's not really s.th. to look out for, i know :) ) BUT also a set of 1970 Zildjian A Cymbals and a 1970 14*6,5 Black Beauty.

i told the woman i'm very (!!!) interested in the Snare and the cymblas. She had no idea what price she should ask, so i told her i woud have to check back and give her a call.

So the questions are:

- what's the worth of a 1970 Black Beauty, 14x6,5, black finish in good condition, some rust on top rim and strainer. serial was 17?????, B/O Badge, poited corner, badge nice and tight.

- what's the worth of the cymbals? Zildjian Avedis1970s, no cracks, 14"HH, 20"Ride, 20"Crash/Ride

I am obviously not trying to cheat on anybody, but i am keen on making a good deal for myself, i guess she'd be happy with anything really ...

thanks

Cymbals are worth about $100 'hats, $125 for each 20"-er.

$350usd there.

A check of the completed listings on eBay shows that there were 3 B/O badge 6.5x14's recently. One sold for a $475 buy now, one for $495 buy now, and one at $519 which did NOT sell at that buy now price.

So fair to say $475 is the market value.

So that would give you a total market value of, what ? .....$925usd.

You would be a bad human being to offer 50% ($465)....that would just be too mercenary of you and yes, it would be taking advantage.....

If it were me, a fair offer ~ where I wouldn't feel like I just tricked someone ~ yet still felt like I got a reasonably good deal would be in the 60-70% range...so...about $575-625usd.

(It can be argued that, on a bad day, the Zildjians if posted on Craigslist would only fetch about $250 for all....)

(It can also be argued that vintage Luddy Black Beauties are less prevalent, therefore more rare, in EU, however...)

I say you ask her how much she is thinking. And offer $250 for all of it.

Are you serious, or just trying to start another one of "those" discussions?

How about this: She is oblivious. Ask what she is thinking she would like, explain the value, then ask if that would still be fair to her, after knowing. After all, you probably will have many hours of labor yet to tie up. After she has the knowledge, and states her position, she will more than likely still think her original offer is good enough for her needs, and then I would offer to pay her an additional sum, I, personally, would offer to throw another $100USD her way, unless she countered at that, then I would feel comfortable, after the fact, taking the goods down the road to be tirelessly restored. And yes, I would feel completely comfortable with this scenario, as she will most certainly know her needs better than I.

DOHUnbelievable - let us not run this thread there (again) - Mschrant already stated he doesn't wanna take advantage so why don't we just respect and applaud that ? Maybe there are overriding considerations other than just getting the most for yourself by paying the least possible ??? Actually - Jonni has a good suggestion Yes Sir it really pretty much takes care of everything Clapping Happy2 (i.e. - plain talk & honesty - & you will very likely end up with a good deal)

hey guys. thanks for the replies.

Jaye: thanks for the Zildjian Values, had absolutely no idea on those.

as for the BB, i was already guessing something like 500USD for a good shape drum, as this one needs a bit of work, and maybe even new rims, i'd guess a little less. Yes those drums are a little rarer here in Europe, so imagine my surprise, when i saw it. i'll take that in consideration when i make an offer.

the thing that really keeps me thinking i should give a fair price as well, is that the drumkit belonged to the womens deceased husband a few years back. emotional things going on there i guess..... i know she's not selling becasue she needs the money, maybe it's a "finishing-up-thinking-and-being-sad"- thing as well.

Yep, Jaye, I just don't get it when a thread is headed toward a sensible direction,

and someone tries to light a match under it.

I was obviously joking...But, I would still ask her how much she would like to get and then top it by a couple hundred.

There ya' go....yes, you can give a fair price which is still a very good deal for you and doesn't take advantage of someone who doesn't really know what they have. In this instance, given the woman's situation and the fact that, thru another person you both know, you have met with her, that is the way to go...
