Correct Tone Control

Loading...

So, I picked up some vintage 3-ply Ludwig shells with tone control hole spacing as seen in the first attached pic. Would the tone control in the second attached pic fit these holes? My initial thought would be no, yet I don't think Ludwig's baseball bat mufflers would fit this pattern either. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your time and your help.

hole not big enough for bat muffler, you need the round knob muffler, how ever the muffler you need has the mounting hole & muffler knob holes reversed.

Would those be the holes for the small knob muffler that predated the baseball bat?

I really think this is for a Baseball Bat muffler. I've had quite a few vintage Ludwig drums and that top holes is too big for the round-knob muffler...even the one that came before the BB. The hole for the operating knob is usually just a bit larger than the rod to prevent binding. I believe the BB muffler requires a 3/8" hole. Measure yours and let us know.

Agree with Mark.

That type of set up is typically the BB muffler. Even some of the setups just after this when they went to the knob style has the larger hole at the top but wouldn’t fit the BB hardware. Not sure if the year they transitioned to the screw at the top style muffler, maybe one of the other Ludwig Gurs can give some input

Hey, Mark. Thanks for your input. The hole is, in fact, 3/8". Based on the current asking prices I've seen for the BB mufflers, I might just go without for the current re-wrap project. Otherwise, I'd end up spending more for the mufflers than I did for the entire kit (lol). I also noticed a knob muffler which might do the trick (see attached pic), but the asking price for that one is more than what they're asking for the BB ones. I'm wondering how many actually utilize the internal tone controls anyway?

That hole would be 1.5" down from the edge if its for the ball bat tone control.

I am considering the Canopus control for my project, they look pretty nice and have been improved with a three way setting. I think they are around 45.00.

Thank you!

Weren't Ludwig mufflers made at some time with either over or under control knob positions .. ??

I have a small knob Keystone Supra with the knob on top, or would this not fit?

Seems like I have had to source both over the years ..?

I installed the Canopus BB muffler on my Classic Maple JF-style snare drum. I can tell with 100% certainty that it DOES NOT fit existing BB holes on vintage Ludwig snare drums! I tried it on my 1966 Ludwig Pioneer snare drum and while I was able to screw the cone into the shell, it was a tight fit! I also tried it on a mid-60's Acrolite and Supraphonic and the cone would NOT go into the existing hole. Also, the included mounting screw is larger than the original Ludwig screw and won't go into the hole without enlarging it. I need to post pictures showing the Canopus in my snare drum.
