ARAI snare drum?

Loading...

Hi there - this ARAI snare is for sale locally - it seems to be in good nick. It is probably a luan shell but there are re-rings. It appears to be quite a well made drum by vintage stencil kit standards. The price is about the equivalent of USD 60. Do you guys think it’s worth the price? I don’t know anything about Arai drums so any input would be appreciated. I really dig the wrap😎

Hello Black Label ….Yes that snare is worth the price

It is Hoshino K. made 8 lugs and as you mention a very cool wrap

now-a-days sixty bucks for a cool vintage MIJ snare is about half what they sell for

Thanks so much Kenwood. Much appreciated. We’re those typical stencil drums or slightly higher quality like the Stars, Pearls and Yamahas? Do you have an idea of the age of that drum?

Hello again Black Label

Well the truth is they (Hoshino K) used some unique finishes and hardware all their own

They did have a high end of sorts, but the snare you are interested in is about mid-line

and comparable to most others, Some of the Hoshino K drums were sold with no bearing edges so look for that.

But edges or not? you can't lose at 60.00 U.S.

As for the age if that badge is actual metal ?

I would guess mid to late sixties if it is more a foil sticker? then early seventies

Hey thanks Kenwood. I will only receive the drum in a couple of weeks' time. I am quite excited to hear how it sounds, especially since it appears to have quite a thin shell, judging by the re-rings. It would appear from the pic of the reso side of the snare, that there appears to be some bearing edges. Thanks for the heads up anyway. And thanks for all the value info too - have a great day.

Sorry, one absolute last question: Am I correct in assuming that the wood - shell and re-rings - will in all likelihood be luan?

Thanks again,

Cheers

Erik

Hello Black Label,

I would say the shell itself would be made of the luan

but the re-rings may likely be some other species
