The FIBES snare used by Buddy Rich

Did Buddy Rich used the same model of Fibes snare until he changed to Slingerlands’?

Hello, I’m a new guy from Japan. I’m huge fan of Buddy Rich.

I’m thinking to buy the Fibes snare which is the one I’m showing on the picture. However, I’m really wondering whether Buddy Rich used this model of fibes snare or not. I’ve seen the video of the fibes drum kit that Buddy actually used, and the snare of it was quite different from what I’m watching now.

Many of Japanese shops say that this one on the picture is the model used by Buddy Rich, but I’m still not sure... it’s really reasonable price so definitely worth buying though flowers2

Someone please tell me the details about thatHelp2

Thank you.

Hello!, and ...

... Buddy used at least 6 different Fibes snare drums starting back in 1965/66! I have THREE of the models he played with the earliest being a 1966/67 that he played when he was playing a full set of Fibes COF drums back in 1967. That said ... the model you are showing here was one that he DID play. He played the Fibes "upside/downside" square badge model right towards the end of his Slingerland endorsement which ended in 1977. The Fibes SFT690/COF snare drum stayed pretty much the same once they went over to 10 lugs in late 1968. Only changes were the badges. If this is at a nice price, and looks to be in nice shape, grab it! They are beautiful snare drums. Buddy knew! I play full Fibes COF drums and use the SFT690/COF 99.9% of the time on gigs! I'll attach a few pics of the three BR models that I have in my BR snare drum collection and one of my 1967/68 Fibes Buddy Rich COF set ... ENJOY!

Mr. TommyP! Nice to meet you!flowers2 I’m so glad that I could get an answer from you sir. I’ve been reading many threads you have answered and I could studied so much about Buddy Rich!

And thank you very much for the information. I no sooner read your answer than I have purchased that snare!

After knowing the fact that Buddy used several Fibes snares, I wonder if we can see those on some footages.

I’ve only seen the “Little Trane” Clip from the Mike Douglas show and the one Buddy plays Away we Go and Rotten Kid on the same TV show. Is there any other clips that I can see the differences of his fibes snare??

Thank you.

And same here Tackerreich!, and THANK YOU Mark! .. idrum4fun .. for the very nice words! So ...

... you asked where you might be able to see more footage of Buddy playing the Fibes 690SFT/COF .. well .. there are countless videos up on YouTube that show him playing this particular snare drum. Before I go any further I want to mention that Buddy played this drum through all FOUR different Fibes badges. That's what a fan of this snare drum he was! The badge found the most is the 2nd and 3rd Fibes badge which is the rectangular Fibes badge, both with and without CFMartin organisation on it. As mentioned, the drum itself with regard to shell and overall build really didn't change. The throw, butt, and badge did over the years though. That said ... look up any Buddy Rich videos from LATE 1967 through 1977 and look for the Fibes snare. He didn't play it non stop during this period with Slingerland, but went back to it again and again until he split Slingerland for Ludwig in 1977. I have in my collection a picture of Buddy playing the Fibes SFT690/COF with the very badge that is on the drum you just bought, so I will attach that for you to see. Actually, I'll attach a few different pics out of my collection showing BR playing this model, and with the different badges as the years went by. GREAT that you grabbed the drum too! I have always referred to Buddy and his Fibes as his "fiberglass experiment", and whereas he only played the full Fibes set for about 6 months in the back part of 1967, he stayed with the Fibes snare drum .. off and on .. 'till 1977! The last pic is the drum you just bought ... ENJOY!

Thank you so much for the pictures!

Wow it’s definitely sure that Fibes snares were his most favourite ones. I’ll probably be able to build the same drum kit on the last picture you showed me! I’m looking forward to receive the package of what I ordered.Sumo Dude

Thank you very much!
