I am looking for a snare for my 64 ludwig black oyster downbeats. I have found a 64 pioneer in beautiful condition and also a 63 downbeat snare in very good condition? Both are BOP. Which would you go for for this set or would you hold out for something different?
64 Ludwig Downbeats Black Oyster, but which snare?
If I had to choose between the two, I would go with the downbeat snare. Even though I would assume the price would be double.

1966 Ludwig Clubdate Oyster Black
1969 Ludwig BB Blue Oyster Keystone Clubdate
1971 Ludwig BB Black Oyster

The Downbeat seems to be edging it! How much would be a fair price for one? Vs Pioneer?

If catalog correct means anything to you, go with the Downbeat snare. That is what the early to mid 60's Down beat kits were shown with. Later, Ludwig changed that to a Supraphonic. Personally, I love the sound of a Pioneer. The Downbeat snare will add value to the set though.

I’ve have and had both and there are some that are awesome and some not so
My preference is my pink champagne downbeat snare
But , funny , the same in Obp was dead it could of been bearing edges but ,I sold it before I looked into it it a luck of the draw
Oh I had a silver dB and it was also great , played it church with the same dB kit...the pioneers I be had were very boxy ...
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp
once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
In your mind is this set a Downbeat that happens to be Oyster Black Pearl or is this a "Ringo" set? If it's the former then I'd get the Downbeat snare as it was the cataloged snare for that set. If it's the latter I'd go with the Pioneer which is just two lugs shy of being a Jazz Festival (or hold out for an actual Jazz Fest). The Pioneer will look correct to 98% of the people seeing the set as a "Beatles" set.
I had a slideshow video of my Ringo set on YouTube (still there probably but bastardized when they pulled my music off it due to copyright issues) and the snare was an OBP Pioneer (I've since bought a 60's OBP Jazz festival...that's in my "new and improved" video) and I had all sorts of goofy comments about the most trivial details, such as I had the wrong collet noses on the swivo tom holder, or the wrong model Buck Rogers snare stand, but no one ever mentioned that the snare was a Pioneer.
My '65 Super Classic in oyster black pearl came to me with a matching Pioneer. Like K.O. mentioned above, if you're trying to recreate a "Ringo" vibe with your kit, the Pioneer is a nice substitute for a Jazz Festival at about half the price. This is my first Pioneer and based on somewhat mixed reviews I'd read online, I wasn't expecting much. Much to my to my surprise, it has exceeded my expectations. In addition to a very "woody" sound, the drum is very open due to having only 6 lugs. The only downside is that I can't get it to tune really high but I have another snare that I can use if I need something in a higher range.
