Another pawn shop score!

Loading...

I've been cleaning up a used PDP FS set to resell in spring. In my market, sets sell much easier with a couple of cymbals, so over the weekend I hit all the local pawn shops, looking for some cheap Zildjian ZBTs

I mostly struck out, but at one shop I came across a set of three cymbals being sold together at a very low price. At first (based on the price) I thought they were just ZBTs that had been polished and the ink rubbed off. So I bought them, brought them home, and didn't look at them again until last night.

My first clue: these cymbals are much heavier than student-grade cymbals. They've been polished a lot, and the logos are worn. I took photos of the logos, and looking through the links here, I think I've bought the following:

18" 1970s Zildjian, 1875 grams.

18" 1980s Zildjian, 2125 grams.

22" 1950s(?) Zildjian, over 3000 grams (my scale stops at 3000.)
How much did I pay for all three? $29.95 plus local sales tax. Yes, I'm sitting here, wondering if I should go buy lottery tickets! Obvously these cymbals will NOT go on the PDP set!

I've attached photos of all three. If anybody can tell me more about them, I'd love to learn!

Great find! That last stamp appears to be a 60's stamp.

Thanks! The last stamp is very tall, looks like a "Type II Large" as described in one of the links. Late 50s/early 60s.

I'm debating whether to keep them or sell them.

Yes it's the 1.5" 60s stamp.

You can see the telltale features on it which show it is the tall version of the 60s stamp.

And Mike should know. He contributed that image to my ongoing work. Thank you Mike.

On my site you can find the Biggles test which can identify the difference between the mid 50s Large Stamp type II and the 60s 1.5" stamp without needing to measure. Here is the direct link to the test:

Glad to help out. I'm still learning too.

I'm trying to come up with easy to apply objective tests which can be used to tell any two stamps apart just from photos. There are a few like the late 50s Small Stamp (SSA variant) vs the mid 50s Large Stamp type 3 which can still be tricky because I haven't yet got multiple tests which can be applied. In that case we're still reliant on what text is bold and what is not -- if you can't get the height in some other way.

They actually sound too loud for my tastes, and the 22" sustains forever. Since I don't gig, I don't need them for performances. I'll probably resell them.
