Favorite Vintage/Discontinued Sticks?

Loading...

Hello,

What are some of your favorite vintage or otherwise discontinued stick models that you enjoy? Note: When I say discontinued, it doesn't necessarily have to be vintage, just no longer currently available.

-I love the Ludwig Pencil Model. I was lucky enough to get a bunch of vintage sticks from a buddy a few years back that got a huge load of them with some vintage Ludwig's he bought. I got 6 pair, 3 wood and 3 nylon. What a great stick for jazz!

-Ludwig Roy Haynes 7A from the later 80's. Something about that Blue Foil Ludwig printing from that era dazzled me. I literally still remember how they SMELLED when I took them out of the clear plastic bag! (It's funny how certain memories trigger smells or other senses you would never even think of)! These were nylon tips, which I am not normally a fan of, but I dug these back in high school (yes, I'm getting old!). The last time I visited my Mom (she still lives in the house I grew up in), she said she found some of my old "drum stuff", which surprised me, because I thought I had everything out of there. It was just some maracas and "toys", but ONE of the Roy Haynes sticks was in there. She said she couldn't find the other. DANG! Another great jazz stick, and a far cry from his Zildjian model available today.

-Two "modern" sticks that have been recently discontinued by Zildjian. One was the 6A. It was slightly longer and slightly thicker than Zildjian's standard 7A. Great feeling stick. The other was the Zildjian "Big Band" model. Just shy of 16" and a small .505" grip. It tapered down to a very thin shoulder and had large oval tips. Very vintage looking. Again, a great feeling stick. I still have one pair, and one of those sticks is a complete banana (it's very warped), but I keep playing those darn things.......

What about you?

Funny you mention that.....

I was browsing sleazebay last night and someone is selling new LAMO sticks. They were unbranded but the seller says they are Gretsch without any markings. I just did a search under "Vintage stick" in the "Percussion" category.

Agreed! I got one pair in the lot I spoke of above in the initial post. I have chipped it and had some minor (not full) breaks. I have glued it back together, filled it with wood filler, sanded it down and polyurethaned it after each minor break, because I want to still keep using it. I know that's a lot of work and hassle for a simple pair of sticks, but since they aren't available anymore, to me it's worth it. It's been holding up well, and my repairs haven't seemed to affect it's integrity or weight/feel. I use it lightly and don't bash with it. Actually I don't bash with any stick, but I am very delicate with these.

Just thought of another recent one:

The Pro Mark 5AST Stinger. I noticed they are not on the Pro Mark website anymore. Great sticks. 5A but with a longer taper and arrowhead type tips. Almost identical to the Vic Firth Stanton Moore signature, just a tad shorter. I'm glad I still have several pair.

Capella. I still have sticks from them that I bought twenty years ago--they really made top quality stuff.

I've got a pair of Spizzichino sticks that are perfect. Maybe someday I'll figure out their equivalent in whatever brand he had them OEM'd.
