1966 Ludwig Jazz Festival Snare - questions

Loading...

Hi, A friend of mine found an old Ludwig snare at a yard sale for $25. I told him to buy it for me sight unseen. It turned out to be a 1966 Jazz festival snare with case. The drum is in amazing shape with original heads, throw off, snares. The hardware and wrap are all in great shape. Serial number indicated 1966. The wrap is a yellow pearl. At first I thought it was a faded white, but it is actually yellow. I can't find anything about a yellow pearl warp online, so asking if anyone has seen it before. Photo attached.

In the era of the web, I can't believe I found such a treasure at a yard sale!

Any insight would be appreciated.

Great score. That wrap is pretty yellow, but afaik, there never was a YMP; I'm guessing yours is really WMP, but take off a rim, or a lug & you should see for yourself. Cool snare.....marko

Love finds like that. My bet is that's a faded WMP but still looks cool. I've found 2 B/O badged acrolites at thrift stores or yard sales for 10 bucks each so far.

One was near perfect and I got 150 bucks for it and the other not quite as good but still got a hundred. Missed out on a set of vintage Pearl tiger stripes a while back that went for 50 bucks in VG condition. Always looking....

Nice find! as Marko mentioned, that is a faded WMP wrap. Ludwig actually has a new wrap that is made to look like that. Enjoy!

While there may not have been any yellow Marine Pearl wrap back then, I don't think I've ever seen WMP faded to that deep yellow color before. Is that color even all the way around the drum, or is it darker on one side and lighter on the other? Even taking off the rims may not accurately tell you the original color. But taking off one of the lugs surely will. I wonder whether or not it had been rewrapped at some point. Is the inside painted white?

Ludwig never made yellow marine pearl but other companies have made vintage WMP that is slightly darker than the original White Marine Pearl.

Hello Jbama... and Welcome to the forum! Wow, what a score! I'm reposting your picture so it will show right-side up! As already mentioned, take off the heads and a lug or two. That will tell us if it's faded. My guess is that it has.
