Date range on a Gretsch snare

Loading...

Hi all,

Could anyone help pinpoint a date range/quality level on this Gretsch snare? It’s listed as “vintage” but doesn’t seem that old. I have a chance to grab it at a pretty good price and have been looking for a Gretsch wood snare for a while. I’m not as familiar with Gretsch as I am with some other major brands and appreciate the help - thanks in advance!

Post turn of the century imported snare. That doesn't necessarily mean it's not a great sounding snare (roughly the equivalent of the Renown series drums). But not "vintage".

Yeah, not sure why he's advertising it as vintage - looks too new. I also never saw that strainer before either. Thanks for the response!

That’s a Gretsch Full Range 10 ply snare. Not a Gretsch USA or vintage but I have one and when tuned up, it’s a nice sounding snare. As K.O. says, it’s the equivalent of a Renown.

If it is like a Renown snare I'd grab it & throw some Gretsch diecast rims on there. The Renowns are outstanding for their price point & really do have that "Great Gretsch Sound".

1964 Ludwig Champagne Super Classic
1970 Ludwig Blue Oyster Super Classic
1977 Rogers Big R Londoner 5 ebony
1972/1978 Rogers Powertone/Big R mix ebony
60's Ludwig Supersensitive
Pearl B4514 COB snare ( the SC snare)
Pearl Firecracker
PJL WMP maple snare
Odds & Sods

Sabians, Paistes, Zildjians, Zyns, UFIPs, MIJs etc

I think the actual date range would be along the lines of 2001 or 2002 up to around 2008 or so when they started putting specific badges on all their lines. The pewter colored square badge without the "USA" on it was sort of a catch all badge for imported Gretsch drums early on in the Kaman era. It appeared on the early Renowns and these various snare drums.

These drums were quite nice and some did come with the silver sealer inside and die-cast hoops. They did use different throw offs than the USA Customs and other USA made Gretsch lines but they work fine. I have a couple of them I snagged at a good price (4x14 models with the die cast hoops) that I wrapped to match a couple of my sets. Nothing wrong with them at all and very high quality on the build. If it's a good price it would be well worth snagging as a good sounding snare to have to play as long you know what it is (a nice snare drum but not vintage or particularly collectible...at least not yet).

Thanks for the info. Is that strainer fairly solid?
