Japanese Tension Rods

I’m trying to figure out the thread size for some tension rods from a 60’s Star floor tom. I went to my local Ace hardware but couldn’t find anything that fit. I need to order some and would rather not do trial and error. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello tpick,

First, you need to determine if these are standard 12-24 us thread or metric. If it's a 60's Star tension rod, then it probably is metric threaded. I don't recall what thread size they might be, though. If they are metric, you're not going to be able to order these, as no one really sells them anymore. Your best bet is to search places like eBay. The proper way to measure tension rod length is from below the collar to the end of the threads. You provided a good picture, so it looks like that tension rod is at least 2.5". Keep in mind that too many sellers list the total length.

I'll see if I can check the thread size one of my Star snare drum tension rods.

Just checked a tension rod from one of my Star snare drums. Definitely not 12-24 threaded! It is metric, but I don't have any metric pitch guides to figure it out. I do believe they are 5mm, but most likely use a pitch that is no longer available.

Just checked eBay. Here's what I think you need... https://www.ebay.com/itm/60s-70s-Star-MIJ-Japan-Metric-Tension-Rods-For-Floor-Tom-Tom-Or-Snare-2-5-Inch/173564866981?hash=item286945b1a5:g:UREAAOSwvl9bsSWJ:rk:1:pf:0

If this is what you need, I suggest you get them before someone else does! Tough to come by!

Maybe one of our members might have some for sale. You can also post in the Wanted section. Good luck!

Thanks so much Mark, I just bought the ones that you sent the link to from ebay. I'll let you know if they're right once they arrive.

I did check the metric sizes at the hardware store, 5mm seemed too small, 6mm was too big, but perhaps as you mentioned the pitch is different.

There is a metric size 5.5mm x .90

That sounds about right! I treat all the metric tension rods on my MIJ drums like gold, knowing that I will find it difficult to obtain replacements!

I think you were wise to get these! Let us know if they work. My gut response is that they are what you need!

Another option is to just order new, "normal" tension rods and just replace the threaded insert (or swivel nut) inside the lug with a new, standard one. I realize this doesn't keep the drum original, but it's much less of a pain in the rear, and it's usually just cheaper to order new rods and inserts. www.drumfactorydirect.com is a great source. Plus you could be hunting for those tension rods for awhile.
