Calling Star Drums Experts Please

Loading...

Hi there - I recently purchased a Star drum set 22" kick (10 lugs), 12", 13" and 16" toms and a 14" snare. The set is en route to me but I have in the interim received the snare, which I am busy cleaning up. From the attached pic, you will note that the color seems to have changed the over the years - from a blueish color around the edges (which was covered by the hoops over the years) to a darker brownish colour towards the middle of the snare. What I am trying to establish is what this wrap color was/is called. Can anyone possibly assist please? Also, based on the badge and the hoops, would this be a 60's or 70's drum? The inners of the toms and kick are black. The wrap on all the drums are in equally good if not better condition as the snare drum's wrap and the bearing edges are as new. These drums are really in very good condition. I will post pics once I receive the kit via courier probably early next week.

Cheers

Erik

That's a great wrap. Try this site:

Ralf, the person who created/runs that site is also a member on here. I'm sure he will show up shortly. He can help (among others on here).

My guess is that it's early 70's. I have an early 70's Star kit with the same badges. Black interiors? I don't recall Star ever painting their interiors shells black, either natural or grey paint. I could be wrong, but most likely someone painted them that way.

It should clean up really nice, get back to near original finish.

Cheers.

Go to RALF's great site: www.star-drums.de. Then click on "Pictures of Drumsets". Then click on "with lug type 920". Then scroll about 3/4 down the page and you'll see an early 70's kit in blue ripple. Unless I'm mistaken, the wrap on this kit is what you've got.

This is the kit I referenced in my last post. Thanks.

Hi there OldSchool - thanks so much for that link and pic. I think that is indeed the color. Strange how it faded into a brown over the years.

BTW: I put the snare together this morning and without too much effort, tuned it to a workable pitch, put the snares on and -- wow -- for a stencil / luan shell, it sounded great! I normally play metal shell snares (Supra and Acro) but I really enjoyed the tone of this snare. I tuned it quite high and it has one heck of a crack with a bit of a ring to it. I put a coated ambassador on top.

The only issue is that the throw off seems to not hold. It keeps loosening. I will need to work on that.

I cannot wait to receive the rest of the kit on Monday.

For sure. Ralf is a great source for all things Star related. Be sure to post more pictures when you can, we love pics haha.

Also, there's a couple of very cool vintage MIJ Facebook groups. Great sources as well.

Great looking drum! I have a 5” Star snare with an original compound strainer that works really well, and it’s a great sounding snare, especially tuned in its sweet spot. Initially carried it as a back up on live performances but it earned a starting spot at some venues.
