Slingerland White Satin Flame

Hi All

Back to ask for some info and help, if possible! I found an old set of Slingerland drums, 24/14/16, no snare, black/silver badge, Niles IL. Two of the S/N are 44xxx, and one is 45xxx. See pics below. A few questions:

I paid $350.00 for the 3 drums, good price? Or about right? Or was I taken?

What is the best way to clean the Satin Flame finish? There are scratches and scuffs that will never come out, but it can be cleaned to look nicer.

There is slight lifting of the seam on FT near the bottom. Best way to glue it? What type of glue?

Notice the "painted" white interior on the BD. Could this have been done at the factory? I've not seen this on any Slingerland drums.

14x24 BD has only one set of spurs. I thought Slingerland always had (2) pairs of spurs for their 14x24?

On the 10x14 tom, the diamond shape bracket has a thumb screw to tighten to the single set-o-matic. I have not seen this. All my Slingerland toms have a "nut" that has to be tightened/loosened with a drum key.

I assume this is an early 70s set based on the S/N, but not sure. I can't find any info on a "set" like this. The person i purchased it from said it was originally bought like this with a Krupa snare, which they sold years ago.

Nice score. I'd say you did very well at $350. Some dickhead would probably ask five times that much on Reverb.

Someone painted the interior. That would have had a clear maple interior.

The earlier 24's had just one set of spurs, if I recall correctly.

Cool set and a fair price. Find a matching 16X16! Probably close to impossible in white satin flame.

To clean the finish, use Scrubbing Bubbles with bleach & an soft damp sponge.

Get a white reso head for the bass, and not worry about the fact that someone painted it. They probably played it without a head and wanted it to match the exterior finish.

You did good at $350! Yes, your kit is from 1970-71. As stated above, the interiors were painted white. The interiors would have been the "chocolate milk" interior, not clear maple.

Concerning the single set of bass drum spurs, the majority of bass drums, regardless of size, did use only one pair. Off the top of my head, I know that the Buddy Rich 80N and Avante kits used two sets of spurs.

The "T" bolt on your tom is correct. Slingerland toms for use with the single Setomatic did have this bolt. The drum-key bolts were normally used with the double Setomatic holder, as the toms would be too close together to use T bolts.

There was a recent topic about cleaning satin flame finishes. The majority agreed on Scrubbing Bubbles or using a mild water/detergent solution and soft bristle brush to clean the finish.

Good buy AlloyBoy. Serials suggest '71. Per Dr CJ Wenk shell interiors could be clear maple or "chocolate milk" stained in '70 and '71. As the others have stated the white interior is not original.

AB,

I think both you and the seller did well on the transaction. You got a great kit with plenty of opportunity for sweat equity, and he didn't 'give them away', but clearly didn't want to work on a project.

I'm really liking the WSF. Those will be beautiful when you are done, and single set-o-matic is without a doubt the most iconic of tom mounts. Proceed!
