Does anybody know how thick a 1960s-70s 3 ply Slingerland drum shell is in mm? And how thick the retaining rings are in mm?
I'm looking for both tom and bass drum thicknesses. Not worried about snare drums.
Thanks!!!

Hi Warrenwood,
Just got to ask...why are you interested in these measurements and in millimeters? Do you want to build your own shells? Inquiring minds want to know!

Thanks! Somehow I missed the link on vintagedrumguide... I wear trifocals for a reason! :)
idrum4fun, yes, I'm thinking about asking Precision to make some 8" and 10" toms for me to match the set. The ply count will be different, but maybe with the same thickness they can get the tones to be close(ish) to the originals.

My Slingerland 3 ply bass drum comes in at 5.17-5.20mm without the wrap. I measured several lug holes and the badge hole. I can't give you the tom and floor tom thickness because I already have the wrap and hardware on. Hope this helps.
The re ring is 6.50-6.60 thick.

I wonder how different the tone of the maple shells will be when compared t my existing set? Maybe I need to look at their mahogany vintage shells instead?
Mahogany will give you a warmer tone. I have both maple and mahogany shell configurations. I prefer the mahogany for the vintage kits with single ply heads.
Just measured the 8x12 shell from my 1967 Slingerland kit. Not counting the original wrap, you're looking at around 5mm for the 3-ply shell and about the same measurement for the solid maple rings. Keller 8-ply shells are around 5.4mm, so that would be the closest in thickness. Precision Drum offers both 5 and 6 ply rings. I'd go with the 6 ply. To get reasonably close to Slingerland's bearing edge, you'd need a round-over/30 degree edge.
Hope this helps. Good luck on your quest!
