Happy to Find This Forum; Ludwig Question

Loading...

Hi:

I'm new to this forum and really glad I found it. I've owned 60's and 70's drum sets from Ludwig, Rogers, Slingy and others. Only thing is, they weren't 'vintage' when I had them! Oh, well... My question today concerns a 14" x 12" Ludwig snare drum I got as a "project" from a friend. The serial # on the Keystone badge indicates an early '80's drum and says Chicago, U.S.A. on it. The original wrap was a very thick chrome metal that was glued on. The wrap was in really bad shape (dents, gouges, etc) and had been removed from the drum prior to my acquisition. It is a 12-lug drum, with triple-flanged hoops for batter and snare side, but oddly, it isn't cut for the snare bed. It came with an Aquarian Classic Clear snare side head and a Remo white coated Emperor batter. The lugs are one-piece. The shell is stamped Q.A .(followed by a check mark) on the outside, and DC on the inside. Does anyone know what this drum's model #/name was? Someone here locally mentioned it might be a "Coliseum" snare, but I can't find any 14 x 12 in the literature I've seen. I could post pics of the shell and all the parts it came with. One other thing; the wrap was riveted on! The bottom of the rivets are embedded into the shell (my buddy drilled them out to remove the beat-up chrome wrap). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff.

It's a marching drum. I don't know the model name. The bottom snare rim was likely replaced with another 12-hole batter rim -IF I understand what you are describing.

Yes, Ludwig did rivet the seams of the wraps for awhile. It had to do with the fact that the new environmentally-friendly glues they had to start using during that time had a tendency to shrink and pull up the seams with it. So, as a kind of last ditch effort, Ludwig riveted the seams.

You have a Ludwig Challenger ST marching snare. 12 lugs and TF rims put it around 1978-80. Most or all marching snares of the era had snares that extended beyond the shell, so there wasn't a need for a snare bed.

Thanks for your replies! Even though this isn't a 'vintage drum' as such, I'd like to put it back to semi-original condition. Where would I find the hardware to install the marching type snare wires that extend beyond the shell? If these parts are unavailable or prohibitively expensive, could I just have the snare bed cut while the new bearing edges are being done? That way, I could just use a standard strainer, butt plate and snare wires?

Yeah, I guess that would work. I don't know where to get parts for a drum like that....but someone will.

It's Ludwig's "Classic" strainer and butt. Regularly on eBay - I think two or three are on auction at the moment. Expect to pay $25-50 depending on condition and whether it has the snares with it.
