Ludwig Club Date 16" Tom? White Whale?

Loading...

Were 16" Ludwig Club Date floor toms incredibly rare? I have been looking for a while now and I honestly can say, I have never seen one. I typically play a 22/16/14/12 or a 20/16/14/12. (So, 1 up and 2 down.) I like the Club Date drums typically, but it seems nearly impossible to find a 16" floor tom in a Club Date model.

Anyone?

The floor tom from my Ludwig Educator kit...Maple Cortex....is an original center lug Club Date style and is 16x16. But I wouldn't generally lump it in the Club Date category though. Like Mark mentioned 12x15 and 14x14 were the norm.

Was the 12X15 an actual floor tom? Or are they snare conversions?

Someone on another forum actually had one many years ago. It was in very rough shape but it did appear to have been built by Ludwig. I tried to buy it but wasn't able to talk him out of it. A few months prior to that I saw one on ebay as part of a gold sparkle center lug "club date" style set that was 13/16/22. They were pre-serial and did appear to be original but none of it lined up with the cataloged club date set. Probably a custom order job.

So it would seem that maybe a very few were built by Ludwig, but never cataloged and quite possibly an original population in single digit quantities...so good luck finding one.

I ended up building my own from a three ply 16x16 shell. Turned out nice. They had eight lugs in case you're interested.

My clone is the gold sparkle 2nd floor tom. The other drums are the set with the drum that appeared to be a factory original. Only photo I have. I didn't think to save any of the auction photos of the one on ebay at the time but I remember it was in great shape.
